Diy: flowy white dress
It's interesting:"Oh. Is there a wedding going on? .... You may never see a wedding like this one again … not now that they've banned multi-buys on supermarket booze. ..."
There are many styles of flowy dresses. Any dress that has a fluid look to it usually uses a lot of fabric to give it that particular look. One style in particular is known as a Maxi Dress. While the length of the Maxi dress can be altered to any particular taste, the fact that they are made from light fabrics such as crinkled satin or chiffon allows them to flow with the wearer's movement.
Things You'll Need
- Measuring tape
- Pre-ruffled or chiffon fabric (4 yards, depending on size)
- Pattern
- Pins
- Elastic
- Threaded sewing machine
Instructions
1
Measure your waist, bust, and hips. Refer to a measurement chart if necessary. The key to making a dress 'flow' is for the fabric to be light and fitted enough to your body so that when you walk, the fabric swings with the movement of your walk. Using a preruffled fabric is a quick way to get the same flowing look and skip several sewing steps.
2
Measure and cut the fabric for the front and back of your body per the pattern. The dress will fit over the bust (depending on where your measured it) and secured with a strap around the back. The rest of the dress will fall to the ground. There will be more fabric than for what you measured. The extra fabric will be gathered above the bust when the elastic is put in.
3
Pin the fabric so that the ruffled side is on the inside. This is so that when you sew, your seams will not be visible.
4
Determine where the seam should be. Smaller sizes can use just one seam up the back of the dress, while larger sizes will likely need to use two side seams. Your pattern will have additional suggestions.
5
Sew the seam (or seams) using a standard hemming stitch situated 1/3 of an inch from the edge of the fabric.
6
Cut the elastic per the pattern instructions and pin to the top of the dress. Fold over the top of the ruffled fabric so that the elastic is hidden. Pin carefully so that the elastic doesn't slip. The elastic will be smaller than the amount of fabric, so when it's pinned, situate the fabric so that it folds onto the elastic. (It will look kind of like a lampshade.) Sew the elastic to the fabric, hemming it so that the elastic is hidden.
7
Sew the straps per the pattern instructions and attach to the front of the dress to tie around the back of the neck.
