Northern Michigan is a popular destination for recreational getaways, as it is home to many lakes and expanses of forest. According to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment, in addition to the Great Lakes, Michigan also claims 11,037 inland lakes. Many of these lakes and their surrounding wooded areas occupy the tip of the Mitten State, providing a scenic backdrop for a day trip, weekend away or longer vacation.
Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore
At 400 feet tall, the Sleeping Bear Dunes are a group of hills made of gold and red sand, located on Leelanau Peninsula, a beach area that juts out into Lake Michigan. Shaped by glaciers long ago, the dunes make a relaxing setting for group adventures and low-key vacations. Vacationers come to the Sleeping Bear Dunes to swim, camp or hike for a weekend or to spend an afternoon enjoying the scenery. The Sleeping Bear Dunes Visitor's Bureau suggests climbing the dunes and picnicking, as well as driving along the free Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive.
The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore community offers both rustic and modernized campgrounds. Additionally, the nearby Stony Brook Lodge offers suites with a view of the dunes, and The Homestead is a local year-round resort on the shore of Lake Michigan. According to the Sleeping Bear Dunes Visitors Bureau, there are more than 60 restaurant options available in the area, from casual quick eats to fine dining.
Mackinac Island
Mackinac Island is located on the northeastern tip of the Michigan "mitten." A destination popular for both romantic getaways and family vacations, this island of 4 square miles is home to many old-fashioned favorites. For example, Murdick's Fudge--one of the most popular local shops--has been operating on the island since 1887.
The world-famous Grand Hotel, built in 1887, attracts international guests based on reputation alone. Although many visitors come to the hotel for weddings or conventions, others just want to enjoy a romantic getaway while being pampered in one of the 385 diverse guest rooms. Roast and Toast is a cozy coffeehouse and cafe that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.
The Pleasantview Winery holds wine tastings, offering Michigan-made wines to try and buy. The Odawa Casino and Resort gives vacationers the chance to gamble, stay in luxury accommodations and dine at the 24-hour Copper Cafe, Waas-No-Dé- Buffet or Sage--the casino's fine-dining option. The Bay View Terrace Inn is a historic 37-bedroom bed and breakfast that caters to large groups as well as couples. The inn also operates a restaurant and offers vacation packages combined with local attractions and activities .
