What to say during the lighting of a wedding unity candle

What to say during the lighting of a wedding unity candle

It's interesting:
"That said, nobody wants the wedding party to go straight from the reception to the divorce courts, so your humour will need to be pitched just right. You want ..."

The lighting of the unity candle has become an increasingly popular practice at wedding ceremonies. Personalizing the presentation can be difficult, but there are several ways in which a couple can make the tradition their own.

  1. The Vows

    • The words spoken during the lighting of the unity candle can act as a continuation, or a precursor, to the marriage vows, depending on the structure of the ceremony. If the couple chooses to extend their vows throughout the lighting, then they can use a traditional vow recitation, or write their own vows with a portion being recited as the candle is lit.

    Liturgy

    • Is the ceremony following any sort of liturgy or religious traditions? If so, the minister can read a traditional wedding blessing, or an excerpt from a holy text, as the couple lights the candle. This way, the couple can focus on the candle as the congregation listens to the reading.

    Sample Readings

    • The most popular biblical passages used in weddings are 1 Corinthians 13 and Ecclesiastes 4:12. The former, commonly referred to as "The Love Chapter," provides an outline of what a perfect love might look like from a Christian perspective. The latter states that "a cord of three strands is not easily broken," meaning that, when a couple is bound together in Christ's love, it is virtually impossible to separate them. This reinforces what the unity candle represents: two joining together, forming a single, inseparable unit.

    Music

    • Another popular companion to the lighting of the candle is special music. Special music can come in many forms: vocal, live instrumental, a combination of the two or an audio recording. This is a time at which the bride and groom can make the ritual more personal than it already is by picking a contemporary piece or hymn that has special significance to them as a couple.
