How to craft wedding reception decorations

craft wedding reception decorations

It's interesting:
"I think you'll all agree that it's been a wonderful wedding so far. ... But I never received a formal invitation to the wedding, so I just hope I haven't eaten a meal ..."

Create a vintage look for a wedding reception using old lace, colorful flowers, faux pearls and classic books. Use two old hardback books, stacked askew, as a base for a lace-trimmed Mason jar of flowers. The two books represent the bride and groom as the perfect match. Provide the decoration for each guest table, the bridal party table, guest book table and gift table.

Things You'll Need

  • Old lace
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape
  • Quart Mason jars
  • Clear craft glue
  • Small glass vases or jars
  • Food coloring
  • Queen Anne's Lace
  • Ranunculus roses
  • Small chrysanthemums
  • Old hardbound books
  • Faux pearl trim
  • Spray paint
  • Paper doilies
  • Old picture frames
  • Old cups and saucers
  • Old cloth handkerchiefs

Instructions

  1. Vintage Lace Table Centerpieces

    • 1

Cut old lace curtains and tablecloths into 36-inch squares to be used as the bottom layer of your reception table centerpieces. Place the squares over a colorful tablecloth- rumple the lace to have folds and gathers. Weave in faux pearl strands artistically.

    • 2

      Canning jars make inexpensive vases.

Glue leftover lace in wide bands around the middle of each Mason jar.

    • 3

Use food coloring to dye Queen Anne's Lace to match your reception colors.

Place food coloring and water in small glass vases or jars. Put stems of Queen Anne's Lace in the colored water to dye the blossoms and leave overnight.

    • 4

Fill each Mason jar with water, and add a selection of colorful Ranunculus roses, Queen Anne's Lace and a variety of chrysanthemums. Do this several hours before the wedding.

    • 5

Stack two old hardback books in an askew manner, as a base for the lace-trimmed Mason jar of flowers. Set the Mason jar vases atop the books.

    • 6

Lay two yards of faux pearl trim, purchased from a craft store, artistically around the books and flowers on top of the lace.

    • 7

    Other Decorations

    • 8

Spray paint lace-style paper doilies to match the real lace. Use these for table assignments or place cards.

    • 9

Use old pictures frames found at flea markets or antique stores to display your engagement photos.

    • 10

Use old teacups and saucers for accents on the serving tables with real cloth handkerchiefs peeking out at the top.

Tips &- Warnings

  • Cut the stems of Queen Anne's Lace at an angle to increase their ability to draw in water. Red and purple do not work well for dyeing Queen Anne's Lace.

  • Find old lace curtains, tablecloths and books at thrift shops, flea markets, antique stores and garage sales.
