Butterfly gardens in illinois

Butterfly gardens in illinois

It's interesting:
"I would like to say that I have a lot of admiration for Linda. She met Paul during his ‘colt’ years, and has dealt with most of his flaws. She’s a beautiful lady, and an even more gorgeous bride. I hope Paul realizes just how lucky he is. But I still don’t know how he got her to say yes because all she seems to say now is “No! Paul, no!”"

Visiting a butterfly garden is a fun activity for families any time of the year, even in the winter. A butterfly garden can be a stand-alone center or an exhibit in a zoo. Illinois has several large, elaborate butterfly gardens where young and old alike delight in watching these flying beauties.

  1. Brookfield Zoo

    • A yellow swallowtail butterfly.

The Brookfield Zoo, also known as the Chicago Zoo, has an open-air butterfly garden. Visitors walk through a special section of the zoo that houses the butterflies and become part of the exhibit. Butterflies will fly and flutter over the plants and greenery while you walk the paths, finding as many butterflies as possible.

Part of this zoo display is a room where the pupas develop behind glass windows. Catch a sneak peek of butterflies as they first emerge from their cocoons. Zoo staff release butterflies to the main room when their wings have completely dried and they are ready for flight.

    Peck Farm Butterfly House

    • A butterfly sipping nectar.

At the Butterfly House on the grounds of Peck Farm Park, butterflies are in an open-air exhibit, flying about as you walk through. New butterflies enter the main display room as soon as they hatch each day. The species on display are both native to the area and from around the world- some can only survive indoors in specialized conditions.

The Butterfly House contains many trees and flowers that are as pretty as the butterflies. Admission to this enchanting place is by donation.

    Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum

    • The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum houses a permanent exhibit called the Judy Istock Butterfly Haven. On display throughout the year are 75 different species of butterflies (and birds), many of which are not native to Illinois. A pupa room always has new cocoons opening and releasing new butterflies into the haven.

The Nature Museum also offers traveling exhibits that feature specific species of butterflies as well as other types of animals year-round.
