Each semester, thousands of San Diego residents of various ages, occupations and backgrounds attend San Diego community colleges. There, they can obtain associate's degrees, pursue vocational and occupational certificates, and acquire general education in smaller learning environments and at lower financial cost than they would at larger universities. The accredited colleges allow students to gain transferable credits toward bachelor's degrees at four-year institutions such as the University of California, California State Universities and private universities.

  1. San Diego City College

    • Nearly 100 years old, SDCC was the third community college established in California. It first opened in 1914 under the name of San Diego Junior College, with just 35 students and four instructors. The two-year institution is located in Downtown San Diego. SDCC offers more than 100 majors, 100 certification programs and 1,500 classes to serve its 16,000 students each semester, according to the school's website. The campus boasts a high-tech, 67,000-square-foot, tri-level research facility called the Learning Resource Center, which houses a multimedia center, independent learning center and library. There, students, faculty and staff can access 300 Internet-connected computers, multiple electronic databases, plasma televisions and a large college of literature.

    San Diego Mesa College

    • An urban campus that serves the greater metropolitan area of San Diego, Mesa College is the largest school in the San Diego Community College District. The 104-acre campus opened in 1964 with 1,900 students and 25 programs. The student body grew quickly, as did the number of full-time attendees.

      Approximately 21,000 to 23,000 students attend as of 2010. They can choose from 80 associate's and 50 certificate programs in 45 disciplines. they school's 107-square-foot, four-level Learning Resource Center has won recognition for its design.

    San Diego Miramar College

    • Miramar College is a suburban campus located on 107 acres in the Mira Mesa/Scripps Ranch community of San Diego. Originally a training facility for law enforcement and firefighters when it opened in 1969, it continues to provide training to these professionals, as well as emergency medical technicians and lifeguards. It's the only school in the world that offers a lifeguard degree. Each semester, 10,000 to 13,000 students attend the school, which offers more than 120 certificates, associate's degrees and transfer programs. The campus houses the Southern California Biotechnology Center, Advanced Transportation and Energy Center, and San Diego Regional Public Safety Institute.
