How to decorate tiered cakes

decorate tiered cakes

It's interesting:
"August is the month when many folk festivals take place, where the audience stares at a bloke with a microphone and one finger stuck in his ear. In contrast ..."

Decorating a cake can bring it from plain to spectacular in a short amount of time. Tiered cakes are often served at big events such as weddings and parties, so utilize your creativity to make this cake look great. Cake decorating does not have to be difficult if you use the right tools, ingredients and some patience. Simple cakes can look just as good as complicated cakes, so do not worry if you are not a master cake decorator. You can still make your tiered cake look great for your event.

Things You'll Need

  • Buttercream frosting
  • Spatula
  • Piping bag with tip
  • Royal icing
  • Flowers (real or millinery)
  • Other decorations (optional)

Instructions

    • 1

Stack the cakes into a tier. Prepare buttercream frosting or purchase it from a store. Buttercream tastes good, is easy to apply and creates a smooth finish on the cake. Apply the buttercream frosting to the cake using your spatula. Smooth the icing on the cake using the spatula. Be creative with the color of the buttercream frosting. A little food coloring can change the color into anything you desire.

    • 2

Place the tip on the piping bag and fill with royal icing. Pipe small scallops or dots around the base of the cake and at the bases of the other tiers. This will give the cake a more finished appearance. You can use the same color frosting as the cake or a different one to create contrast.

    • 3

Create flowers out of the frosting by piping small flowers onto a sheet of parchment paper. Add leaves to the sides. Allow them to dry before removing the flowers with a spatula and transferring them to the cake.

    • 4

Use real flowers to decorate the cake. This creates a beautiful and natural look. Place flowers on top of the cake and around the base of the tiers.

    • 5

Place millinery flowers, which are usually made out of silk, on top and around the cake. This look will last longer than using real flowers.

    • 6

Place other types of decorations on the cake if flowers do not work for your event. Try small figurines for holidays, leaves, branches, fruit or experiment with designs using the pastry bag and royal icing. Be creative and have fun.
