Ideas for a non traditional wedding

Ideas for a non traditional wedding

It's interesting:
"Kick things off with a topical wedding-themed icebreaker, as this will show everybody that you've been thinking about the speech right up to the last minute."

Whether you're an offbeat couple or just want to have a wedding that is unique, the key to a non-traditional wedding is to think about what kind of wedding you will enjoy rather than worrying too much about what the guests will think. Remember your guests love you and are coming to celebrate your happiness, so if you're enjoying your special day, so will your family and friends.

  1. Get Married By a Pal

    • If you're not a religious couple or just want to be married by someone you know and love, have a friend or family member get registered online to become a wedding officiant. Your chosen officiant can get registered through a number of websites like First Nation Ministry, which provides the necessary documents for $32 as of October 2011. Check with your local county clerk office about what your state requires for an officiant.

    Personalized Bridal Party

    • Don't hold fast to the traditional idea of a matched-set bridal party. If your groom's best friend is a woman, make her his "woman of honor." The same goes for a bride who wants to have male friends stand behind her- call them your "bridesmen." If you want to have six bridesmaids and he only wants two groomsmen, have the extra women walk down the aisle by themselves or in pairs. Or feel free to ditch the bridal party altogether.

    Don't Wear White

    • A non-traditional bride should feel free to wear a non-traditional dress. Look at the collections of alternative bridal designers such as Punk Rock Bride, a line that includes knit dresses and two-piece ensembles. Some bridal dress designers now make dresses in shades of pink or gold or use fabric with colorful patterns. If you spot a bridesmaids dress that you love, see if the designer makes it in a pale shade. You could end up with a much cheaper dress this way.

    Pick an Unexpected Location

    • Think outside the box when choosing a location for the wedding. So what if no one has ever gotten married in that pumpkin patch before- that makes it all the more special. Look into art galleries, apple orchards, historical buildings or the local zoo. Think about places that have meaning for you as a couple. If you met in the grocery store, think about exchanging vows in Aisle 14. Choose someplace offbeat for the ceremony and a more traditional reception location.

    Reception Entertainment

    • Hire professional entertainers to perform at your wedding. Have a troupe of jugglers, a barbershop quartet or a few belly-dancers circulate throughout the crowd rather than doing one performance on the dance floor. This way, all your guests can get an up-close look at the performers, and the reception will feel more like a party than a stuffy event.

    Eat Outside the Box

    • Rather than the standard beef or fish options, choose a theme for the food at your reception. Serve French food, and decorate the buffet tables with statuettes of the Eiffel Tower. Choose a Mexican theme, and have fajitas and a make-your-own tacos station. If your reception is casual and fun, you might even ask the waiters to wear sombreros. Have the band or DJ play music that matches your theme during the dinner hour.
