The Biltmore Estate in Asheville, North Carolina, is America's largest privately owned home. It was built by George and Edith Vanderbilt, of the famous railroad wealth family, in 1895. The Vanderbilts received guests for the first time on Christmas Eve that year.

1. Name

   • George Vanderbilt chose the name Biltmore by combining the words "Bildt," the region in Holland from where his family came, and "more," which means "rolling hills" in Old English.

   • The Biltmore Estate is a 250-room French Renaissance chateau that covers four acres within its walls.

   Highlights

   • The home features 65 fireplaces, 43 bathrooms an indoor pool and a bowling alley.

   Design

   • Famous architect Richard Morris Hunt designed the home. Frederick Law Olmsted designed the landscape, including the formal gardens.

   • Parts of the home were opened to the public in the 1930s in an effort to boost tourism during the Depression.
