Nautical wedding themes
It's interesting:"A wedding is a time for joy and fun, with friends and family gathered to see the happy couple off as they start their new life. But it is a time, too, when our ..."
Whether you live on the water or grew up hundreds of miles inland, a nautical theme can be worked into your wedding vision. Incorporating a sea or boat theme may be most fitting for a beach-side wedding, but even a landlocked celebration can include some seaworthy elements. Guests will feel as if they were transported into a breezy and romantic seaside celebration.
Yacht Theme
To throw an upscale wedding by the sea, hold the reception at a yacht club or country club next to the water. Choose navy blue and white as your colors. Cover the tables in crisp blue cloths and set them with white place settings. Decorations for the reception may include old-fashioned wire lanterns and colorful flags. If your budget allows, hold the entire reception on a yacht, or, just the bride and groom can leave the reception on the yacht. Guests can gather on the dock and wave sparklers as you sail away.
Pirate Theme
A pirate wedding is not for everyone, but if you are a fun-loving couple this theme could fit you perfectly. Hang treasure maps on the walls of the reception hall, and add an old wagon wheel to mimic a captain's wheel. Scatter "pirate" chests throughout the rest of the area. Buy wooden chests at antique or thrift stores and fill them with sand. Arrange fake jewelry and eye patches in the sand of one chest and invite each guest to don one before entering the ceremony. You can also arrange guest favors in these chests for guests to pick up on the way out.
Naval Theme
If either of the couple or any one of their parents has served in the United States Navy, it is appropriate that you would honor this branch of the military at your wedding. You are entitled to be married in an official military wedding if one of the couple is graduate or a dependent of a graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. If you do have these navy ties, ask your friends who are navy members to create a canopy of swords for you to walk through into the reception. Decorate your reception with American flags and framed photos of U.S. Navy vessels, then leave your reception to the tune of the Naval Academy's fight song, "Anchors Aweigh."
Shipwreck Theme
If you are interested in having a playful, intimate wedding with a nautical angle, choose a shipwreck theme. You do not have to be by the water to make this theme work. Hang fishnets on the walls and use island decor on all the tables. Place single blooms in beat-up glass bottles and serve cocktails in coconut shells. Fill glass bowls with sand and arrange seashells on top of the sand to create centerpieces. If your budget allows, buy or rent a small canoe to sit at the entrance to your wedding. Guests can climb inside to pose for pictures.
