1. Engagement

   • The engagement is the most unique aspect of marriage traditions in the USA. Every couple has a different tale to tell. It's the one area couples "own," making it entirely a reflection of their personalities.

   Dress

   • Most brides in the U.S. prefer to wear white or ivory wedding gowns. White represents purity, and the more religious brides might opt for ivory. First-time brides wear full-length gowns and those going down the aisle the second time wear knee length or tea length.

   Processional

   • The first glimpse the groom gets of his bride in her wedding dress is during the processional. The groom waits at the altar. The groomsmen and bridesmaids, followed by the best man and maid of honor, walk down the aisle ahead of the bride. The flower girl and ring bearer follow, then the bride's father escorts her.

   Rice

   • At one time, rice was thrown at the bride and groom after their vows. Now birdseed, which is more eco-friendly, is thrown. Tradition states it promotes fertility.

   • The wedding cake began as wheat bread that was broken over the bride's head to bring a life of wedded bliss. Now the cake has become a work of art. The top layer is often frozen and eaten on the one-year anniversary.
