The Victorian era began in 1837, during the rule of Queen Victoria in the United Kingdom. Fashion was "ladylike" and styles were modest, as well as hot, heavy and uncomfortable. Although Queen Victoria's son, Edward VII, was King from 1901 to his death in 1910, many historians consider the Edwardian period to extend until 1914. Unlike Queen Victoria, King Edward loved to travel, and his tastes were influenced by the art and style of Continental Europe. As a result, fashion during the Edwardian era was more lavish than Victorian dress.

  1. The Victorian Woman

    • Corsets were laced tightly during the Victorian era, to achieve the tiniest waistline for an hourglass shape.

      Victorian fashion was not about comfort. Hourglass-shaped corsets compressed the abdomen, forcing it downward. They were typically V-shaped at the bustline. Skirts were wide and bell-shaped, made from stiff linen. It wasn't unusual for a woman to wear six petticoats that, in total, weighed as much as 14 pounds. By the mid-1850s, however, crinoline and cage hoops had replaced heavy petticoats, and by the middle of the Victorian era, which was around 1870, bustles replaced hoop skirts. Victorian women also wore lavishly trimmed bonnets until around 1890.

    The Edwardian Woman

    • Women's hats became larger during the early 1900s and were often adorned with feathers.

      A new corset shape emerged during the last 10 years of the Victorian era, and was popular throughout the Edwardian period. Known as the "health" corset, it allowed women to breathe a little more freely and was designed to support and raise the abdomen. Unlike the corsets of the Victorian era, corsets worn during the Edwardian period moved straight across the bustline and were designed to force the chest forward and hips back, giving a women's profile has an S-shape curve.

      Skirts in the early Edwardian era followed a trumpet bell shape, flaring over the hips and widening at the hemline. By the end of the Edwardian era, however, skirts were straighter, and high empire waistlines created a new silhouette. Edwardian "Merry Widow" hats featured wide brims, and were adorned with large feathers.

    Women's Sleeve Styles

    • This woman wears a dress with a typical early Victorian sleeve.

      Gowns and blouses featured many different types of sleeve styles during both periods. Early Victorian gowns had dropped shoulders, with sleeve seams on the upper arm, a few inches below the shoulder. The sleeves began with a tight fit, then puffed into a round, billowy shape. The sleeve became tighter-fitting again just below the elbow before ending above the wrist.

      The typical Edwardian sleeve was more relaxed. Made from soft fabric, the sleeves puffed only slightly from the shoulder to the elbow, where they were cinched tightly with a ribbon. The bottom of the sleeve flared out from the elbow to the wrist, resembling delicate hanging pleats usually made from lace or an embroidered knit.

    Menswear

    • Menswear changed only slightly from the Victorian to the Edwardian eras. Calf-length coats, single-breasted tweed jackets, and three-piece suits worn open to reveal a waistcoat were popular styles throughout both periods. Top hats and ascots were popular accessories.

      During the earlier part of the Victorian era, men's coats were long, ending mid-calf. Dramatic cloaks or capes were also worn. Most coat styles, such as the "sack coat," and shirts were loose-fitting. At the start of the Edwardian era in the early 1900s, jacket and suit styles were updated with the incorporation of elements still seen in modern menswear, including straighter cuts, especially for jackets and coats. Men's clothing was also designed to fit closer to the body.

If you are considering a public location, such as a public garden or park, consider what other activities may be going on during your ceremony and whether or not they might interfere. It may be best to avoid shoes with a heel, depending on the terrain. It is also advisable for the bride to avoid wearing any perfume that may attract insects.

Fill the reception hall with white and blue with a touch of silver to bring the vibrancy of Greece to life. Turn yourself into a goddess with a dress inspired by the women of Ancient Greece. The recipe for a successful Greek-inspired reception consists of plenty of food, wine and dancing.

  1. Ceremony

    • Ask the best man to place stefana, or flowered crowns, on the bride and groom that are linked with a silk ribbon. The crown is a symbol of God and the ribbon symbolizes unity between the couple. Walk three times around the altar in your first steps as a married couple, then remove the stefana. The three times around the altar symbolizes the Holy Trinity, and several portions of the traditional Greek ceremony are repeated three times.

    Attire

    • Wear a wedding gown inspired by the Greek goddesses. Choose a dress with one shoulder that has an A-line shape and drapes gracefully to the floor.     Decorations

For an extra touch, add white chair covers draped elegantly with light blue sashes. Create circular centerpieces out of flowers and place a candle in the center. Drape the walls with gauzy fabrics made to appear like Ancient Greek curtains.

    Food

    • Serve traditional Greek food, such as grilled fish, lamb chops and fish soup. Offer meatballs, fried shrimp, eggplant dip and anchovy salad as appetizers. Besides having a multi-tiered cake, provide a selection of other desserts, including baklava, which is layers of pastry with nuts soaked in honey. Wine is an important part of Greek receptions, especially white wine. Plan ahead for the long celebration with an abundant wine supply.

    Other Traditions

    • Give guests the traditional Greek wedding favor, candy-coated almonds. The almonds, known as koufeta in Greece, are wrapped in small mesh bags or blue boxes. The bride and groom may perform the kalamatiano, which is a dance where they each hold the end of the same handkerchief in one of their hands. Invite guests to join in the Greek circle dance and break inexpensive plates to ward off evil spirits.

    • The wedding invitation was originally only word of mouth, as printing was limited and many citizens could not read or write. In 1796, an Austrian named Alois Senefelder invented lithography, which increased the number of printed wedding invitations. By 1900, it was customary in America to send wedding invitees an official printed invitation in black and white or color. The tradition has extended to save the date and separate reception invitation cards, but the original 1900 wedding invitation remains in modern wedding ceremony preparations.

    White Brides

    • In 1840, Queen Victoria of England was married in a white wedding dress. By 1900, the rise of the department store and Queen Victoria's influence found many American brides dressed in white. Department stores made clean white dresses available to brides, so every bride was able to have a new dress, rather than having to use a family heirloom, which may be grayed by storage. The white wedding dress is used in modern times and continues to symbolize purity and girlhood innocence.

Afternoon weddings, usually at 2 p.m., were widely popular. Americans adopted this tradition and continue to hold modern weddings in the early afternoon. Due to English weddings only being legal between the hours of 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. in the 1900s, wedding licences were issued to allow for afternoon weddings. This tradition was adopted by the Americans and is a requirement for modern day marriages.

Sundials use the position of the sun to measure the time of day. Iconic models use a thin rod or triangle, called a style or gnomon, to cast a shadow and indicate the time, but other sundials use a line of light, which can be let in through a small hole, focused through a lens or reflected by a mirror. For an interesting project, try making, adjusting and reading different sundials.

  1. Equatorial Sundial

    • Collect a protractor, drinking straw or knitting needle and a piece of thick paper or thin cardboard about 25 cm long, and a little wider than your protractor. Draw a line 1 cm from each end across the paper- label them lines A and C. If you live above 50 degrees latitude, draw another line 15 cm from the back end- if you live below 50 degrees, make it 16 or 17 cm. This is line B. Draw a dot on the mid-point of each line, and draw a line down the middle connecting them. Center your protractor on the midpoint of line A and trace around it, then mark off 15-degree intervals. Make a pinhole at the midpoint and repeat this on the back of the paper in the same spot. Fold the paper perpendicularly at line B, then fold the ends of the paper in toward that fold at lines A and C. Push a straw through the hole you made at the midpoint of A, and set the straw at a right angle to the paper. Lean the straw and paper back toward the other end of the paper (line C) until the fold at line B makes the same angle as your latitude in degrees. Secure the straw in place by cutting a tab in the flap at line C and inserting it into the straw. You can now align your gnomon with the earth's north pole and read the sun time.

    Horizontal Sundial

    • Select a sturdy rectangular base, such as a piece of wood or cardboard. Draw a stencil for your triangular gnomon. Label the point at the center of the sundial as A, the top point B and the back point C. Line AC is the longest- it rests on the base. Angles A and C should be equivalent to your latitude. Use this stencil to cut out a gnomon from a sturdy material, such as wood or cardboard. Also cut out a cylindrical rod a little bit longer than side BC of your triangle. Glue side AC of your gnomon to the middle back of your base, and glue the rod to side BC. Fold a piece of paper in half, and set a protractor in the middle along the top edge. Trace around the protractor and mark off every 15 degrees. Set the piece of paper against side AB of the triangle, right under the protruding rod. Tie a long piece of string to the rod, and set a piece of paper under the sundial that is several inches wider than the base. Mark the points where the 15-degree lines touch the base of the sundial, and use the string to follow the lines that extend beyond the base and mark their contact points on the piece of paper underneath. Remove the paper below the rod, and use a ruler to trace lines from point C through each of the points you just made, marking the 15 degree lines. These are the hour lines. Use a compass to orient the base on the north/south axis.

    Orienting Sundials

    • There are three ways you can orient a sundial. The easiest and most practical way is to use a compass and align the sundial gnomon on the north/south axis. A lazier, but less effective way, is to look at the time on an electric clock and adjust the sundial so it reads the same time. If you want to be a purist, though, you can orient your sundial without any mechanical objects by pointing your sundial at the North Star at night. The North Star, or Polaris, is within one degree of the North Pole, which is the true object towards which the sundial should be pointed. This method only works for inhabitants of the Northern Hemisphere. If you are working on sundials in class, challenge your students to come up with their own methods for orienting sundials.

    Unusual Sundials

    • There are many sundials besides equatorial and horizontal models. You can download a pattern for an equiangular sundial, which requires no knowledge of your latitude or the north/south axis, or you can follow the intricate angular patterns for a portable Capuchin sundial, which uses a hanging thread and a complex pattern of curves and squares to give the time based on the date. Vertical sundials are similar to their horizontal counterparts, but the plane is aligned vertically, and spherical sundials use a sphere-shaped plane, rather than a flat base. Of course, the simplest sundial is just a stick stuck in the ground- these gave rise to the famous Egyptian obelisks. You can experiment with different types of sundials and research which models are the easiest to make, the most accurate or the most beneficial for your latitude.

Advanced degrees in teaching and research are master of (sacred) theology and doctor of theology or philosophy.

    Admission Criteria

    • Even though each theological school may have additional criteria of admission, a general condition is that students must have a baccalaureate degree or equivalent issued by a member institution of the Association of Universities and Colleges or an institution accredited by a U.S. agency recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. A transfer of credits from other institutions toward the degree pursued is possible, but depends on the school's approval. Tuition and fees vary, but eligible students may be granted financial aid and scholarships.

The Caribbean's distinctive sights, sounds and colors has made it a popular tourist destination, especially for cruise passengers who visit by the thousands each day. While each island has had its character molded by traditions brought over by West African slaves, and customs imposed on the people by a succession of conquerors from many European countries, some traditions are common throughout the region.

  1. Carnival

    • All the islands hold at least one blowout Carnival celebration, though at three different times of the year: during Easter season- June, July or early August- or December and January, in conjunction with Christmas. These events feature abundant food, drink, music, dance and parades from morning to night with participants in colorful costumes.

    Music

    • Caribbean music has an upbeat vibe. In 1937, when colonial authorities refused to allow local musicians on Trinidad to play percussion instruments, they improvised on discarded oil drums and the distinctive sound of the steel drum was born. Now, steel bands play their cheerful music on all the islands.

      Calypso music is a precursor to rap, a satiric, bawdy genre with biting lyrics often improvised to lampoon current events or social customs. Competitions for the Calypso King are held all over the islands.

    Language

    • English is spoken throughout the islands, but each island retains the languages spoken by their various occupiers over the centuries, including Dutch, French and Spanish. On French St. Martin, the natives speak a version of Creole.

    Siesta

    • Some businesses still shut down for a siesta between noon and 2 p.m., although the custom is fading on the islands with heavy cruise ship presence because potential customers are in town for just the day.

    Moko Jumbies

    • The moko jumbies are skilled stilt walkers who have performed since the islands were inhabited by West African slaves. Legend has it that the first moko walked across the ocean from Africa on his stilts. A moko is an African god or spirit who watches over the village from a great height. "Jumbie" is the West Indian word for ghost. Today, the moko jumbies do more crowd-pleasing than ghost-busting. They wear long robes and elaborate head dresses while dancing on 6- to 8-foot stilts. They can be found throughout the islands, especially at Carnival and holiday time.

    Weddings

    • Weddings are fairly casual affairs, with the bride and groom dressed in their finest. The bride wears a veil and walks to the groom's house, then they walk together to the church with the whole town turning out to congratulate them. Anyone is welcome to the wedding. Only honored guests receive written invitations. The bride's father or both parents give her away, and the groom has no best man. The traditional wedding cake is called a Black Cake, a sort of rum fruitcake recipe passed down through generations of the bride's family. The reception can go on all night, and the happy couple usually spends a week honeymooning, either right in town or on another island.
