  1. Finalizing the Location, Catering, Vendors

    • The first thing you are going to want to do is finalize plans with the venue. Make sure to ask about catering and pick your menus. Many banquet halls and hotels offer packages that include wedding cakes. Usually the hotel or hall will arrange a time with you and your partner to come in and do a taste test. If the location does not offer catering or cake options, you are going to have to make arrangements through vendors. Make sure to also book a rehearsal dinner time and location. You will have to provide these vendors with a final count of your wedding guests.

      Check out photographers and videographers if you want professional photos and a video of your wedding. Along with the photographer you will need to book a DJ or band for the reception.

      Book an officiant to perform the ceremony. Find out what will be required of you to obtain the marriage license. Make sure your officiant has a substitute just in case.

      Make out checks for all of these vendors in advance so you can give them out at the ceremony.

Things You'll Need

  • Box cake mix
  • Cake pan
  • Large bowl
  • Stirring utensil or mixer
  • Whole milk or water (1/2 cup)
  • Oil (1/3 cup)
  • Eggs (4)
  • Instant pudding mix, in a flavor that complements your cake mix
  • Measuring cup
  • Oven with timer
  • Toothpick or fork

Instructions

  1. Make a Box Cake Denser

    • 1

      Preheat oven to 350°-F and lightly coat the bottom of the cake pan with oil. (You can also use cooking spray or dust the pan with flour.)

    • 2

      Combine cake mix and instant pudding mix in a large bowl. Add 1/2 cup whole milk (can also use water), 1/3 cup oil, and 4 eggs into mixture.

      Most box cake recipes call for 1/2 or 1/3 cup oil, so the amount of oil is slightly less or around the same. But the amount of water is greatly reduced in this recipe. Most box cake recipes instruct you to use 1 and 1/4 cups of water, and this recipe calls only for 1/2 cup. Whole milk is a recommended substitute for water because it has a thickening effect, but water will still work. The pudding mix and extra egg also produce firmer results.

      Blend all ingredients together in the bowl, using either a stirring utensil or a mixer. Blend until the mixture is smooth and has no lumps. It will be thicker than most box cake mixes at this point.

      Pour the mixture into your greased or floured pan. It may not pour easily- use a utensil to spread it evenly in the pan.

      Bake according to the instructions on the box. (Typically 25 to 35 minutes for a 13" x 9" pan.)

      Check on the cake periodically after 25 minutes of bake time. Use a toothpick or fork to poke the center of the cake. If it comes out clean, the cake is ready to come out of the oven. If not, let it continue to bake and keep checking on it.

      When the cake is ready, remove it from the oven, let it cool, and decorate with icing (if desired). Then cut, serve, and enjoy a firm piece of box cake!

As an example, "Please join John and Mary, following the ceremony, for a barbecue celebrating their marriage at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Doe. 123 Main Street, Anywhere USA." Or, like the formal invitations, informal can begin with the hosts' names inviting the guests to a Hawaiian luau to celebrate the happy couple.

      Depending on the number of guests invited and the theme of the reception, a response card may or may not be included.

    Post-Wedding Receptions

    • Many times, the couple has chosen to elope and have a small, intimate ceremony with a few close family members and friends, or have their wedding ceremony at a romantic location miles away from their home. Those circumstances do not mean the couple, or parents of the couple, cannot host a post-wedding reception for family and friends celebrating the recent marriage.

      There are considerations and requirements that a post-wedding reception invitation must include. The invitation must make it clear that the wedding has already taken place, at another time and place. And, like a wedding invitation, the hosts to the reception must be named, requesting or inviting the guest to the celebration of the marriage. Like any other wedding reception invitation, a post-wedding reception invitation then will contain the specifics of time, place and venue. Most, if not all, receptions given post-wedding are informal.
