The date is set, the bride and groom are ready, but if you want anyone to attend the wedding you need to get the invitations in the mail. That means making sense of all the paper piled up called the "wedding invitation." Except it's not just the invitation- it is also response cards, direction cards, reception cards and several envelopes. Assembling the invitation so it is in the right order is not as complex as it might sound. It is usually done very logically as a sort of paper pyramid.

  1. Before Beginning

    • Before you begin, you will want to address the envelopes (outer, inner and response). Otherwise, the writing might leave an indentation in the invitation or bleed through (if using a calligraphy marker). Make sure you place a stamp on the response envelope as well.

    Assemble the Insertions

    • There is no exact etiquette on what order the insertions need to go. Insertions include the response card, reception card, response envelope, directions or map card and any thing else that will be sent with the invitation. Some experts suggest placing them face up in order of size, largest on the bottom. Another suggestion is to start with the response card (face up), response envelope (face down), response card (face up tucked underneath the flap of the response envelope), directions or map card, followed by any other enclosures.

    Where to Place the Insertions

    • If you have a single fold invitation where the wording is on top, the insertions are placed on top of the invitation. If you are using tissue paper, place the tissue paper between the invitation and the insertions so it covers the wording of the invitation. Tissue paper is optional. If you have multi-fold invitations or single fold invitations where the wording is on the inside, place the insertions inside the first fold.

    Stuffing the Envelopes

    • If using an inner envelope, pick up the invitation and insertions and place it into the inner envelope so the writing is on top facing the flap. Think of it this way, when the person opens the inner envelope, he or she would pull out everything "face up" and not be looking at the back side of your invitation. Do not tuck or seal the inner envelope. Then, place the inner envelope so the writing faces the flap of the outer envelope.

Enlist the help of one or two friends if the responsibility feels like too much for you to bear alone. Address envelopes before stuffing as the empty envelopes will provide a smoother surface to write on. Turn on some music, grab a comfortable chair, and dive into the invitation assembly line.

Instructions

      Place stacks of each invitation piece in an assembly line on a flat, clean surface such as a dining table. Arrange all inner enclosures text side up in the following order: ceremony invitations, tissue paper, reception cards, additional information cards, maps and response cards.

      Place response envelopes, inner envelopes and outer envelopes flap side up at the end of the assembly line.

      Set one ceremony invitation in front of you. Open the ceremony invitation if it is a folded card style. Lay tissue paper over the printed text on the invitation if you wish.

      Place a reception card inside the ceremony invitation for folded cards or on top of the flat ceremony card.

      Set an additional information card on top of the reception card. An additional information card includes information such as suggested hotels for overnight guests and your wedding website information.

      Lay a map card on top of the additional information card.

      Place a response card text side up under the flap of the response envelope. The envelope flap covers the response card text.

      Set the response envelope with the response card on top of the additional information card. Close the folds of the ceremony invitation, if applicable.

      Insert the stuffed invitation into an inner envelope so that all text faces the flap side. Close the unsealed inner envelope flap. Do not tuck the flap inside the envelope. Do not seal.

      Check that guests' names match on the inner and the outer envelopes.

      Insert the stuffed inner envelope into an outer envelope so that the flaps face the same direction. Seal the outer envelope.

    • 12

      Check guests' names off the invitation assembly list to indicate that each guest's invitation was completed.

  • Take one fully assembled invitation to the post office to determine postage amount.

  • Keep food and drink away from the invitation assembly line.
