Ideas for wedding ceremony readings

Ideas for wedding ceremony readings

It's interesting:
"And for those of you who don't know, this special day in the lives of Dave and Sarah also happens to be Chinese New Year! Or, as they call it in China."

A reading during a ceremony allows the bride and groom to share a favorite poem or passage. More often, it is a way to remind everyone present of the importance of the day. A reading traditionally occurs at the beginning of the wedding, before the vows are given.

  1. Books

    • A less obvious but still very sweet reading comes from the childrens book, "The Velveteen Rabbit" where the Rabbit asks the Skin Horse what it means to be real. The Skin Horse points out that real means sometimes getting hurt and that it takes a long time. And how "once you are real, you can't be ugly, except to people who don't understand." This passage makes for a sweet commentary on commitment and love.

    Religious

    • There are many well known religious readings such as the verses on love from 1 Corinthians. Try lesser known readings such as Ecclesiates 4:9-12, which talks about how "two are better than one." For a Jewish wedding you might consider 'The Seven Blessings' reading. 'The Seven Blessings' begins with "We acknowledge the Unity of all within the sovereignty of God, expressing our appreciation for this wine, symbol and aid of our rejoicing." The end of the reading is as follows "Praised is love- blessed be this marriage. May the bride and bridegroom rejoice together."

    Poetry

    • When choosing a poetry reading be sure the message of love is clear. A good example would be Christina Rosetti's "Untitled" which emphasizes the presence of love from beginning to end with lines such as

      "What is the beginning? Love.

      What the course. Love still.

What the goal. The goal is Love."

Beautiful poetry options are plentiful with e.e. cummings, such as "somewhere I have never travelled" that marvels at the magic of marriage. For example:

"(i do not know what it is about you that closes

and opens- only something in me understands

the voice of your eyes is deeper than all roses)."

    Miscellaneous

    • When in doubt, use a blessing to invoke a spirit of love and commitment. There are a number from which to choose such as a Cherokee prayer which focuses on honoring nature and asking nature to protect the marriage. Another option could be choosing a set of song lyrics from a favorite song of both the bride and groom.

Cool wedding invitation ideas

Cool wedding invitation ideas

It's interesting:
"Best man speech writing put this challenge into sharp relief: You are not a professional comedian (at least we don't think you are), but everyone at that wedding ..."

When you are planning your wedding, you want everything to be unique and special, starting with the invitations you send to guests. Your wedding invitations are the first indication of your wedding's atmosphere. It is important to select invitations that express the tone of the wedding and the personalities of the bride and groom. In other words, you want your wedding invitations to be cool.

  1. Seed Paper

    • Wedding invitations made with seed-embedded paper can subtly express that the couple is earthy and environmentally conscious. The invitation paper has flower seeds embedded in it, and the invitation wording can be printed directly onto the seed paper or printed on a separate, thinner paper and attached over the seed paper. After the wedding, your guests can tear bits of the invitation seed paper off and plant the seeds in a pot or in their gardens. Be sure to include instructions on plant the seed paper with the invitations. Use the seed-embedded theme throughout your wedding for programs, place cards, favors, and thank you notes. You can make seed-embedded paper yourself or hire a craftsman or artist to do it, or you can purchase it through various vendors, for a more refined look.

    Shapes

    • Selecting a differently shaped invitation can make your invitations stand out. A square, long rectangular or specialty die-cut shape invitation will set your wedding apart. A die-cut invitation can reflect the theme of your wedding. For example, a beach wedding invitation may be in the shape of a palm tree, sea shell, umbrella or sandal. Cut outs on your invitations can also add uniqueness and a personal touch, like a round circle, or heart shape, cut out of the front that reveals a photo of the couple.

    Embellishment

    • Embellishments added to your wedding invitations can change an ordinary invitation into extraordinary. Two holes punched in the top with satin or silk ribbon threaded through and tied in a bow adds interest and color to a more formal invitation. Glue pressed flowers, small sea shells, or white sand and glitter lightly around the front edge to emphasis the theme of your wedding. A classy and cool idea for your wedding invitations is to wrap a wide piece of ribbon or lace around the card, then tie it into a bow with a sprig of dried flowers, leaves, or herbs tucked into it.

Places to go camping in kzn

Places to go camping in kzn

It's interesting:
"It's a shame, given this is a winter wedding, that the minister wouldn't let Paul and Linda have the pantomime theme wedding they originally wanted. Looking at Paul, I think ‘Puss in Boots’ would have been very appropriate."

KwaZulu-Natal, a province in South Africa, is home to some of the most wondrous natural sites in the world. Its mountainous interior is a hiker's dream while flatlands and coastal areas are prime for those who love water sports. If you are planning a trip to that area of the world and are up for spending some quality time with Mother Nature, it helps to know where the best camp sites in the area are.

  1. Mahai Campsite at Royal Natal National Park

    • The Mahai Campsite, located at the Royal Natal National Park in Natal Drakensberg, is an ideal location for people who want to simply pack up their tents and take a weekend away from the hustle and bustle of city life. The campsite offers amenities like hot showers and the option of sites that have electricity as well as sites that do not, so those who want to truly escape all the comforts of civilization are not tempted.

In addition to the campsite, Royal Natal National Park offers campers the chance to explore the many hiking trails, springs and rivers in the park.

    Midmar Dam

    • Midmar Dam is a great place to consider camping if you are a lover of water sports. In addition to the prime opportunity to unload the jet skis and speed boats, Midmar Dam is also surrounded by acres of hiking trails, bike trails, fishing holes and picnic areas where families who simply want to relax under the sun can do just that.

If you don't own a boat but still want to enjoy a day on the lake, you are not out of luck. There is a boat shop on Midmar Dam where campers can rent boats during weekends.

    St. Lucia Estuary

    • The St. Lucia Estuary is one of the biggest tourist points in the KZN region and has several camping and conservation areas, one of which is the St. Lucia Game Reserve that was first established in 1895. Estuary campsites include the Sugarloaf, Santa Lucia and Eden Park sites. The Eden Park site is of special interest as it is small and secluded from the rest of the site, sitting in the middle of a small forest with a 2.5-mile hiking trail surrounding the camp site.

Nice places in ontario to get married

Nice places in ontario to get married

It's interesting:
"Since meeting Linda, I've seen terrific changes in Paul. He seems much more confident these days. He's surer of what he wants. He's happier, and he's much more willing to bend these days, too. Although he’s still adamant that Arsenal will win the next seasons Champions League."

From castle-like estates to luxury hotels to outdoor venues that take advantage of the region's natural splendor, you can find many public and private facilities throughout the Canadian province of Ontario that make picture-perfect wedding locations. In many cases, a couple has the option of hosting their ceremony and reception in the same place.

  1. Niagara Falls

    • Niagara Falls is a busy destination wedding location.

The famous Niagara Falls make a spectacular setting for weddings. A popular ceremony site is the Oakes Garden Theatre in the Clifton Hill district, which has the Bridal Veil Falls as a backdrop. Couples can also choose to get married in the chapel at the Marriott Niagara Falls Hotel Fallsviews, which overlooks the falls.

    Lakeside Beaches

    • Niagara Falls is not Ontario's only noteworthy body of water. The region is home to a number of lakes that make picturesque beach wedding locations. At the Chippewa Cottage Resort in Barry's Bay, couples can exchange vows on the shore or on the lawn, which overlooks Lake Kamaniskeg. The Northridge Inn and Resort hosts wedding ceremonies on its Lake Bernard pier, which presents an island backdrop.

    National Historic Sites

    • Couples can rent several National Historic Sites throughout Ontario for weddings, including Ruthven Park, less then three miles north of the town of Cayuga. They also can select marriage in the gazebo on the grounds or in the park's circa 1840 stone Coach House.

The Coach House at Durdun Castle in Hamilton also hosts weddings, as does Parkwood estate in Oshawa. Parkwood's gardens hosts weddings from May through September and the mansion hosts private events from October through April.

    Toronto

    • Toronto offers a wide variety of wedding venues. Among the most sought-after is the Palais Royale Ballroom, a former boathouse and dance hall. The ballroom can accommodate 880 guests for a cocktail event and 330 for a seated dinner with a dance floor, which has a fireplace and overlooks Lake Ontario.

Casa Loma, another choice, is a castle-like historic house and museum in Toronto which can accommodate up to 600 guests in its great hall, library and conservatory.

    Ottawa

    • In Ottawa, the Canadian capital, couples can have an outdoor winter ceremony at Strathmere, a historic rural mansion that hosts weddings year-round. Strathmere offers several ceremony and reception sites, including an1860s inn and renovated century-old barn. Couples can exchange vows outdoors beneath the shade of the 100-year-old walnut trees on the property.

For couples who prefer an urban setting, one option is the Lord Elgin Hotel in downtown Ottawa. It has five banquet rooms to accommodate weddings large and small.

Most popular wedding readings

Most popular wedding readings

It's interesting:
"This wedding really couldn't come at a better time for anyone. Gary will probably be bald by this time next year. And Annabelle's just found out that ..."

Though the marriage ceremony does not require a reading in order to be complete, most couples want a reading performed at their wedding before the ceremony concludes. Readings give everyone a moment for reflection on marriage itself while providing guests with an insight into the couple's relationship. There are countless readings to choose from, whether you decide to select a religious or secular piece.

  1. Selecting Your Readings

    • When it comes to choosing a wedding reading, look for readings that represent your view of marriage and love while signaling to your guests the love you share as a couple. Additionally, do not feel obliged to pick only one reading. If you wish to include a religious as well as a secular reading, your officiant will make accommodations for you. You can also ask one of your wedding guests or attendants to perform the reading so that more people are involved in your day.

    Religious Readings

    • A reading from 1 Corinthians: 13: 4, which presents the well-known line, "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud," is one of the most commonly used wedding readings. This line reminds the bride and groom of the nature of love while reinforcing the weight of the marriage ceremony.

    Secular Readings

    • One celebrated secular reading is from Anne Morrow Lindbergh's "Gift from the Sea," which includes this thought: "Relationships must be like islands, one must accept them for what

they are here and now, within their limits -- islands, surrounded and interrupted by the sea, and

continually visited and abandoned by the tides." Other popular readings include "Never Marry but for Love," by William Penn, and excerpts from "The Velveteen Rabbit," by Margery Williams, and "Foundations of Marriage," by Regina Hill. All discuss the value of allowing another person to love you and the contentment of people who allow love into their lives.

    Poetry

    • "The Art of Marriage," by Wilferd A. Peterson, is one of the most commonly used pieces of poetry in weddings. Peterson's poem tells his listeners that the best way to keep love strong is to pay attention to little details, such as saying, "I love you," and looking for the good in one another rather than the faults. However, if you are looking for a more traditional poem, Shakespeare's "Sonnet 116" has been used for centuries. This poem likens love to a guiding light, which can see lovers through any storm just as the North Star guides seafaring sailors.

Bask in the glow of flickering candlelight as you eat and drink food and beverages fit for lovers. Make Valentine's Day dinner arrangements in advance, allowing a stress-free evening at home. Follow each other from the first embrace to wherever the night leads you.

Does this Spark an idea?

    • Select an orchid for a dinner table centerpiece.

Love and passion can erupt in the right environment. Invite your lover to attend a midnight dinner for two. Even if you live together, extend a romantic invitation. Dinner

    • Set a romantic Valentine's Day dinner table for two.

You may want to devote your time to preparing yourself for your romantic night instead of the food. Order a catered Valentine's Day dinner. Call your favorite restaurant a month in advance to determine when to place your Feb. 14 order. Ask for delivery or pick up the food in the evening. Serve a menu that might include French onion soup, lamb chops, rosemary potatoes, asparagus and chocolate mousse for dessert.

    • Take advantage of Valentine's Day dinner at home by dancing the night away to your music, at your pleasure and to your heart's delight. Enjoy the freedom of drifting into each other's arms to a song that moves you. Follow the rhythm of your feet and the beat of your hearts as the evening passes.

Medieval wedding games

Medieval wedding games

It's interesting:
"Charles Dickens said a measure of a woman’s love for her man was the lengths to which she was prepared to go to make him happy. If this holds true, then Linda, you have reached that goal, for Paul is the happiest I have ever seen him."

Medieval wedding games can add a bit of lighthearted fun to even the most elegant of themed wedding festivities. Games can be both sophisticated and entertaining, offering something for guests of all ages. Medieval wedding games can be based on true medieval games, traditions and folklore to give them an authentic look and feel.

  1. What's Under the Veil?

    • In medieval times, marriages were frequently arranged, with the couple remaining strangers until they met at the wedding ceremony. The bride traditionally wore a veil to obscure herself until the marriage contract was sealed and the groom could not back out if he didn't like the looks of his new wife. A medieval wedding game that mirrors this tradition could include a game along the lines of "The Dating Game." Conceal wedding party members under non-transparent veils and allow wedding guests to ask "yes" or "no" questions of the participants to try and determine their identities.

    Lucky Scrolls

    • Scrolls were used frequently in medieval times to exchange correspondence, post announcements and make public proclamations. Carry on the traditional use of scrolls by randomly placing rolled, secured scrolls at each place setting during the wedding reception. Guests who open a pre-marked "lucky scroll" win a gift or prize, such as a dance with the bride or a special wedding favor.

    Name That Strolling Minstrel Tune

    • Minstrels were musicians who walked the streets of medieval villages, playing a flute-like pipe or stringed instrument and singing songs in exchange for spare change. For an authentic medieval wedding reception that features a strolling minstrel, instruct the performer to play not only traditional period tunes, but to also work in some familiar modern-day music. Encourage wedding guests to participate in a "name that tune" contest.

King or Queen of the Bean

    • In medieval times, a popular game at holiday celebrations involved baking a bean into a small bread or cake. Children were randomly given the cakes and the one who found a magic "bean" baked into their treat would be named "King or Queen of the Bean" and would receive special attention during the day. Replicate this tradition by arranging for specially-baked cakes to be placed at tables with one or more baked with an edible "bean." Whichever guest finds the bean is the "winner" and is named "King or Queen of the Bean" for the remainder of the day. Adorn this special guest with a plastic crown and scepter.

    Calligraphy Instruction

    • Calligraphy is an artistic and formal form of handwriting whose origin is linked to medieval times. Traditionally written using a quill and ink well, formal documents, papers and correspondence, including wedding invitations, were painstakingly done in this elaborate writing style. As a nod to this ancient tradition, invite a calligraphy expert to be stationed at a table during the wedding reception to help interested party guests write their names in medieval calligraphy script.

    Kiss the Frog

    • In medieval-themed fairy tales, princesses often kissed frogs with the hope that one would magically turn into her prince. As a romantic twist on "Pin the Tail on the Donkey," invite wedding guests to reenact the tradition of frog-kissing by trying to attach self-sticking plastic or sticker lips on a frog poster situated near the entry or exit of the reception. New ideas for cyber cafes

New ideas for cyber cafes

It's interesting:
"Now, I appreciate that you're all missing the Wimbledon final to be here today, but let this wedding be a reminder that there's more to life than single events ..."

Being connected to the Internet is more than a luxury- most people need access to wireless data for efficiency in business, keeping track of email and appointments, managing bank accounts and bill paying, as well as keeping in touch with family, friends and professional contacts. As we hurry from one location to another and travel on business, the need for wireless cyber café-s continues. Cyber café-s have merged wireless Internet with a place to grab a quick drink and a bite to eat: a multi-tasking bonus for busy people on the go.

  1. The Basics

    • To have a cyber café- that maximizes patronage and functionality, install power sockets throughout the space. Most Internet users prefer to use electric power rather than wasting battery life. Often, cyber café-s are lacking adequate sockets.

While a table is not required for every wireless patron, enough seating is. Many café-s lack seats for all the people who would like to patronize the café-.

Free Wi-Fi is almost required, as many fast-food outlets now offer it, making competition keen for a new cyber café- owner.

    Coffee

    • The owner also needs to make money from the customers sitting at her tables and using the no-cost Wi-Fi. Offering coffee and other beverages is a must, but to compete with other café-s, you need a twist. Consider roasting and grinding coffee beans for a truly gourmet experience. Patrons can't ignore the enticing aromas of a fresh brew, and coffee is still the cyber drink of choice. Add a selection of fresh fruit and vegetable smoothies for a caffeine alternative.

    Cocktail Crowd

    • If local ordinances allow, serve wine and beer starting with the cocktail hour. Savvy singles will love the idea of a glass of pinot noir while they review end-of-the-day business and cast a stray eye over the other patrons. Convivial customers will soon snap shut their laptops as new friendships are made and dates are arranged.

Extend the theme by offering delicious little plates of tapas from around the world. The cost-to-profit ratio is excellent, and this type of fare is easy to prepare ahead of time, heating and serving as required, some even come straight from the refrigerator.

To make the transformation complete, install lighting that enhances the wine-bar feel and makes the space hip and edgy: café- by day and lounge at night.

    Wi-Fi and Pie

    • A full-service restaurant doesn't fit well with a cyber café-, as customers want to work and have a fast beverage and something uncomplicated to eat: the fewer utensils the better. Instead of the usual muffins and scones, consider teaming up with a pastry chef who specializes. Pies come in a variety of savory and sweet versions. And "hand pies" like calzones and English meat pasties lend themselves to the cyber experience. Pies worthy of a standalone shop will be sought out by Wi-Fi patrons and knock out the competition.

How to become a corporate event or wedding planner

become a corporate event or wedding planner

It's interesting:
"Paul is caring, he's generous, he's sensitive… in fact I don't even know him anymore. Linda has changed my best friend. Actually, I should thank you Linda. You've done in 18 months what I couldn't do in 18 years."

Corporate event and wedding planner jobs require the same event planning and organizational skills, even though the target markets differ. While corporate planners help schedule meetings, conferences and professional functions for businesses, wedding planners primarily deal with couples. Corporate planners are often hired as full-time event or meeting planners in organizations, while wedding planners typically work on a consultancy basis. However, both positions involve scheduling, planning and coordinating events according to their clients’- expectations and budget requirements.

Things You'll Need

  • Professional experience
  • College degree (optional)
  • Industry contacts
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills

Instructions

    • 1

Earn a college degree in marketing, communications, public relations or advertising. Take courses including consumer behavior, market research, economics and accounting to build business administration and management skills. Enroll in an event and meeting planning, or wedding consultant certificate program if cost and time constraints prevent you from investing in a two- or four-degree.

    • 2

Apply to entry-level positions with hotels, country clubs, churches or private industry companies. Work on different aspects of corporate planning —- venue research, internal and external communications, on-site coordination and follow-up activities —- to acquire enough experience for promotion to a more senior position. Become a bridal consultant or wedding coordinator for a resort, department store, or bridal shop, for example, if you want to learn all aspects of the wedding business.

    • 3

Attend industry events and conferences for corporate planning or wedding consultant professionals to build your network and customer base. Start gathering contact information for vendors, colleagues, clients and referrals. Schedule regular lunches and meetings to trade industry practices and keep abreast of the latest trends in the sector.

    • 4

Develop your “-soft”- and “-hard”- skills. Hone your organizational and financial management skills by maintaining a calendar, monitoring budgets, and creating schedules and checklists. Familiarize yourself with software and Internet tools that assist professional corporate and wedding planners with their daily tasks.

    • 5

Create a resume and portfolio that displays your work in the corporate planning or wedding planning field. Get permission from clients to use them as references or for testimonials to draw client prospects. Consider obtaining a professional designation as a Certified Wedding Planner or Certified Meeting Professional to distinguish yourself from other corporate and wedding planners.

Tips &- Warnings

  • Consider interning with an event planning firm, or becoming an apprentice to a wedding planner during high school or college. Gaining experience early on can give you a head-start on skills and resources needed to become a corporate or wedding planner.

  • Join campus clubs or professional associations that allow you to plan and host events on a volunteer basis. Look into membership and volunteer opportunities with professional organizations such as the Association of Bridal Consultants and Event Planners Association.

  • Corporate and event planners must work with a plethora of vendors and industry professionals. Establishing positive relationships with photographers, caterers, promotional companies and printers can result in discounts and extra perks for you and your clients.

Royal blue wedding theme ideas

Royal blue wedding theme ideas

It's interesting:
"Linda and I first met about 18 months ago, when it quickly became clear to me that here was a woman of many attributes - beauty, brains, wisdom and, fortunately for Paul, a disarming love for dumb animals."

Oftentimes the first step in planning your wedding -- aside from finding the love of your life to marry -- is choosing a color palette for your big day. The majority of your wedding revolves around the colors you choose, which makes choosing flowers, cakes and bridesmaid attire difficult if you haven't chosen a color. Royal blue is a universal color used in both elegant, high-end weddings as well as intimate, casual affairs such as beach weddings- once you've chosen royal blue as your color there are a variety of themes you can work with to pull together your wedding.

  1. Royal Blue Themes

    • Royal blue themes are plentiful and each aspect of your wedding is pulled together by this one color. Before you begin shopping for an array of royal blue dé-cor and attire, pull the color together by choosing a theme- it's difficult to create an entirely blue wedding without using accent colors and accessories to accentuate the blue. Consider a nautical theme, perfect for a wedding at your parents' vacation home on the water. Royal blue also makes a royal theme easy to pull off because it is an elegant color- or consider a beach theme for your beach wedding, or use royal blue to create your winter wedding wonderland.

    Wedding Party Attire

    • Now that you know what theme you're going with, choose the appropriate attire. For your beach- or nautical-themed wedding, choose bridesmaids' gowns that are above the knee that work well with the casual elegance of your theme. For your royal-themed wedding, choose long gowns with diamond -- or other stones -- jewelry and matching shoes. For your winter wonderland wedding, put your bridesmaids in gowns with faux-fur wraps in white. For the men, choose khaki pants, blue or white button-down shirts, and royal blue ties for the beach or nautical theme, and tuxes with royal blue ties for the more elegant royal wedding or winter wonderland affair. Put your flower girl in a white dress with a royal blue sash.

    Cakes

    • Your cake is one of the most creative aspects of your royal blue wedding, and there is very little that bakeries cannot do to a cake to make it exactly what you want for your themed wedding. For your nautical wedding, consider using a royal blue and white foundation for your cake with an anchor as an added touch. For your beach wedding, consider asking your baker to make your cake look like a sandcastle or just a regular cake with royal blue fondant and colorful fish, shells and other ocean accents. For a winter wonderland, your cake can have white snowflakes that shimmer under the lights of your reception- consider an ice sculpture to go along with your cake. A royal wedding calls for a royal cake- perhaps a tall, elegant royal blue cake with silver ribbon or gemstones lining the bottom of each layer and your new initials glittering atop the cake.

    Flowers

    • The other most creative aspect of your wedding is your flowers. Your florist is able to create bridal bouquets, centerpieces and aisle dé-cor using royal blue flowers alone or by accenting them with other colors that go with your theme: royal blue and white for your nautical them- royal blue with greens and light blues and tans for your beach wedding- or royal blue and silver for royal or winter wonderland wedding themes. The completed effect will pull together your reception venue. Flower selections are endless- add sparkle to bouquets with rhinestones, choose tall centerpieces with diamonds and pearls dripping from the stems, or choose low, casual flowers to add to white tables covered in candles and sand to go with your beach-themed wedding.

How to prepare a wedding reception checklist

prepare a wedding reception checklist

It's interesting:
"Wedding days are meant to be unforgettable occasions, and this one certainly will be. The weather held out, the ceremony went without a hitch, and now a ..."

Planning a wedding can be time-consuming and stressful. Make wedding planning as simple as possible by creating a checklist for everything that needs to be done -- including the reception -- -from months before the wedding until the actual wedding day. Having every task detailed will make it easier to figure out how much you have to do and how much you can put off until later so you can enjoy your engagement.

Instructions

    • 1

Write a list about what you have to do immediately after getting engaged. If you have a long engagement, you can wait to start on this list - it should be accomplished at least one year before your wedding date. Include setting a wedding date, writing a guest list and determining your budget in this list. Remember, you'll need to write a guest list before setting a budget - the number of people you want at your wedding will determine your budget. Also, you may opt to have your engagement announcement printed in your local newspaper.

    • 2

Create a checklist for everything that needs to be accomplished at least nine months before the wedding date. The following items should be included: booking vendors, including your photographer and videographer, caterer, florist and officiant- asking friends and family to be members of your bridal party- determining your wedding colors and choosing bridesmaid dresses- purchasing wedding rings- planning your honeymoon- and purchasing your wedding gown.

    • 3

Write down everything that needs to be accomplished six months before the wedding. Included on the list should be choosing the music for your ceremony and reception, finalizing the prenuptial agreement, starting pre-marriage counseling, ordering invitations, signing up for a gift registry and sending your save-the-dates.

    • 4

Make a checklist that includes everything that should be accomplished four months before your reception, including sending your wedding announcement to your local newspaper, ordering wedding programs, finding tuxedos for the groomsmen, booking transportation for the wedding day, securing blocks of hotel rooms, choosing a wedding cake and a groom's cake, planning the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner and ordering wedding favors.

    • 5

Breakdown the final three months of the wedding. Three months before the wedding, you should discuss the specifics of the ceremony with your officiant- make final changes to the guest list- purchase your toasting glasses, cake knife, garter and guest book as well as bridal party gifts- write your wedding vows and send invitations. Two months before the wedding, your checklist should include having a hair and makeup consultation, getting your wedding license, having a dress fitting, finalizing your plans with vendors, completing name change documents and booking your hotel room for the wedding night. One month before the wedding you'll want to finalize all of the wedding details as well as create a seating chart.

    • 6

Detail exactly what you have to do during the hectic weeks before the wedding. You'll need to pick up your wedding gown, have the groomsmen attend a final tuxedo fitting, attend the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner, get a manicure, arrange tip envelopes for your vendors and bring decorations to the reception hall. On the day of your wedding, you'll likely want to have your hair and makeup professionally done and schedule enough time to prepare for the ceremony and reception.

Tips &- Warnings

  • Purchase a wedding binder and begin organizing your ideas and plans immediately.

How to grow lilacs in a warm climate

grow lilacs in a warm climate

It's interesting:
"There are those who accuse Paul of being unromantic. Well, all I can say, Linda, is that he'll prove them wrong on February 14 when he celebrates Valentine's ..."

Lilacs are not only beautiful, but they have been grown for their lovely perfume for centuries. They populate gardens across the country and are a favorite flower for many. If you live where winter temperatures do not get cold, you may think you can't grow lilacs. The good news is that there are varieties that are bred especially for warmer climates. Here is some information on grow lilacs in a warm climate.

Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

First you need to consider how cold your winter temperatures are. If your winters offer at least an occasional hard freeze, the standard lilac (syringa vulgaris) or many of the other cool-climate varieties (zones 3 - 7) will probably grow well for you. If you live where frosts are mild or non-existent you might want to try one of the special cultivars of lilac developed for a warm climate.

    • 2

Warmer climates can benefit from some of the special hot-summer varieties bred by the Descanso experts a little over a half century ago. The Descanso Gardens in La Cañ-ada Flintridge, CA (Los Angeles) has a wonderful garden devoted solely to these hybrids. Some of these lilacs do lose a little of the strong scent for which lilacs are famous, but others still smell great. And they can handle the warmer climates from Southern California across to some parts of Florida. Consider 'Angel White,' 'Blue Skies,' 'Blue Boy', 'Dark Night', 'Chiffon', 'California Rose' or 'Lavender Lady.' Most of these hybrid lilacs grow about 6' - 12' tall as compared to the cooler-climate lilacs, some of which can reach tree size at 20' or more.

    • 3

Good drainage, sun, neutral to slightly alkaline soil will keep them happy. Lilacs all bloom on second year growth so cut them back right after flowering (if you're going to prune them at all) to allow growth for next year's blooms. If plants grow too big, snip off interior branches a few at a time over the years so plenty of new growth shoots remain to offer flowers the following year. Do not over-water these hybrid lilacs.

    • 4

All lilacs have a rather short blooming period. Try using different varieties in your garden to extend the blooming season.

    • 5

In the springtime your lilacs will put on a colorful show. Don't forget to cut the flowers to bring indoors. The heady perfume will bring spring freshness into your home to compliment the big, colorful panicles of bloom.

    • 6

For more information on lilacs in general and grow lilacs in a warm climate, see the links in the Resources below.

Wedding gift ideas with a romantic movie theme

Wedding gift ideas with a romantic movie theme

It's interesting:
"I know it's Catherine and Stuart's wedding day, but all week I've only been thinking about what might have been … We were this close to a British ..."

Romantic movies can inspire some much-appreciated wedding gifts. Even when the movie doesn't end with a beginning--such as in the highest-grossing romantic movie of them all, "Titanic"--the idea of that one great love resonates with bridal couples. Choosing romantic movie-themed wedding gifts is more than looking for romantic DVDs for the couple's collection- to go all out, think like a romantic movie buff.

  1. Original Movie Poster

    • A framed original movie poster is a work of art, especially if you can find a vintage poster for one of the couple's favorite classic romantic movies, such as "Casablanca" or "West Side Story." Be prepared to pay a lot of money for an original vintage poster- be sure that it is properly framed to give it the best protection. If the couple prefers a specific modern romantic film, look for a promotional poster, banner or standee from the release, which will cost less than vintage items.

    Custom Movie Poster

    • Use a photo of the wedding couple to have a custom movie poster made. Several graphics companies will create a professional poster that looks just like real movie poster. Select from a variety of romantic movie templates. Add custom text. For example, you can put the names of the bride and groom at the top as the stars, with the names of the members of the wedding party listed in the credits section.

    Movie Night Gift Basket

    • Create a basket for romantic evenings at home that includes a collection of classic romantic movies on blu-ray, as well as gourmet treats. Customize the contents to the couple- include non-perishable components of a gourmet meal, such as pasta sauce, spaghetti and olives- popcorn- several gourmet seasoning blends, which can be used for more than just popcorn- and gourmet chocolates or hard-to-find vintage candies. Make the basket part of the gift. Add some functional extras, such as a pepper mill, salad tongs and a serving platter.

    Romantic Movie Wine Gifts

    • Wine and champagne play a part in many romantic movies. While it may be impossible to match the exact wine to a favorite movie scene, you can give the type of wine and glassware as a gift. For example, a bottle or two of Cordon Rougue Champagne--along with a pair of bowl-type glasses--evokes "Casablanca"- make it clear by including a movie still or the blu-ray. If the couple loves "Gone With The Wind," give a bottle of good brandy and antique glasses.

Second vs first shooter photography

Second vs. first shooter photography

It's interesting:
"Tom looks great on his wedding day doesn't he? I won't say it's funny to see ... Congratulations to Tom and Susan on their wedding. And since it's election week ..."

Commercial photography is a very individual business, but even the best professional photographers still need help to make their camera worlds come alive. Simply put, a single photographer cannot be in every place at once. Thus, with the help of a second shooter, he can put together a portfolio that captures the staid and relaxed aspects of a hired event far better than could be managed alone.

  1. First Shooter

    • The first-shooter photographer is the person most laypeople expect to be handling the camera. He is the skilled photographer hired for an event who stages the main photographs, handles the photo arrangements, takes the big photos desired by clients and prepares the final photo package to be delivered to the customer.

    Second Shooter

    • A second shooter works as part of a team of commercial photographers. His role is to take photos at an event that aren't necessarily staged or formalized. Instead, the second shooter may capture a momentary emotional moment of event-goers between formal staging or may take various candid photos of things and people to remember an event by. Instead of taking formal photos of everyone looking proper, the second shooter looks for opportunities to catch people laughing at a funny joke or holding hands quietly as witnesses to someone else's event.

    Team Work

    • Working together, the first and second shooter as a team on a hired event will in theory capture the whole event photographically. The two angles can capture both the formal and informal images that make an event real and memorable in photography. For example, one photographer may catch a couple from the front as they proceed to the altar in a wedding. Simultaneously the second shooter will catch the length of the bride's wedding dress train from the rear as an added image element. If trained properly, both photographers will capture and event much better than one very-skilled photographer can possibly manage.

    Labor Setup

    • Frequently, the second shooter tends to be a mid-experienced partner level for a photographer transitioning to the full professional level in commercial photography. The second shooter will very often work for the first shooter as an assistant, but more than just an equipment gopher. Eventually, the second shooter can take experience learning from the first shooter to then venture out on his own. In a sense, the labor relationship works similarly to an apprenticeship.

Teaching activities for the flipflop girl by katherine paterson

Teaching activities for "the flip-flop girl" by katherine paterson

It's interesting:
"It was a stipulation for the wedding that the groomsmen weren't allowed to look better than the Best Man today and I'm pleased to say they have accomplished ..."

Written by Katherine Paterson, "The Flip-Flop Girl" tells the story of Vinnie, a young girl struggling to come to terms with the death of her father. Her predicament is exacerbated when the family are forced to leave their home town and move across the country to live with their grandmother in Virginia. Often read by students in grade five or six, this story deals with the complex themes of loss, adjustment and friendship.

  1. Character Assessment

    • To help students get to know the characters from "The Flip-Flop Girl," have them write a character assessment. To do this, split the class into six groups and give each group one of the following characters- Vinnie, Mason, Mom, Grandma, Mr. Clayton and Loop. Each group now has 20 minutes to compile an assessment presentation of their character. They should include a physical description, likes and dislikes, contribution to the plot and relationship with other characters. Encourage students to use supporting quotes. On completion, each group should present their findings to the rest of the class.

    Student-and-Teacher Relationships

    • In "The Flip-Flop Girl," Vinnie's relationship with her teacher, Mr. Clayton, is of great importance in driving the plot. As a class, discuss the basis of this relationship. Students should comment on how Mr. Clayton brings great joy to Vinnie's life but also creates jealousy and conflict with Lupe. Make a verbal list of the reasons why Vinnie feels betrayed by Mr. Clayton. After the discussion, ask students to write a reflection on student-and-teacher relationships. Encourage them to refer directly to their own experiences. Students can also use examples from the story to consider the positive and negative aspects of student-and-teacher relationships.

    Adjustment

    • In this activity, students consider Vinnie's experience of moving to a new school. This is a particularly useful activity if you have new students in your class, as they can contribute to the discussion. Start the discussion by asking students to find quotes from the book that illustrate Vinnie's adjustment in her new school. Was her experience positive, negative or both? What factors helped or hindered her adjustment? Students can then contribute their ideas about adjusting to a new school and how this process can be made easier. As a homework activity, ask students to write one paragraph that summarizes Vinnie's adjustment into her new school.

Native american wedding themes

Native american wedding themes

It's interesting:
"It gives me enormous pleasure and pride to be here today, although I am slightly unprepared for this heat; when Paul told me the wedding was to be held in his ..."

Paying tribute to a Native American culture during your wedding reception might bring together two different families into one natural celebration of marriage. Whether using traditional Native American ceremonies or adding cultural touches to an existing color scheme, your wedding can contain an essential part of your heritage. Consider all aspects of wedding planning when choosing a Native American theme and where traditional expressions can be added without overdoing it.

  1. Decoration

    • When possible, hang handmade dream catchers as a protective symbol over your guests and their seating arrangements. Gain permission from the banquet manager to use tacks, double-sided tape or removable hanging hooks to float the three or four different sized dream catchers as a centerpiece using clear fishing wire. Historically, dream catchers can capture and preserve dreams not unlike the dream of eternal happiness and matrimony shared between the bride and groom. Set Native American pottery on formal tables to keep with the theme.

    Cuisine

    • Correlate efforts with the head chef or catering manager for your wedding to incorporate traditional Native American cuisine presented with a gourmet appeal for your guests. The "three sisters" of food containing corn, beans and squash were historically eaten by Native Americans as well as hunted animals like buffalo. Consider dressing up buffalo steaks as a lesser fat and more nutritious meat option with side dishes consisting of butternut squash puree, steamed corn with roasted red peppers and a three-bean salad.

    Wedding Dresses and Accessories

    • Brides commonly wore handmade dresses adorned with bead work and fringes hanging from the dress bottom and sleeves. Knee-high moccasins were also beaded and both were historically made from animal hides or leather. Speak to any Native American family members as wedding dresses were often passed down from generations before posing as a family heirloom or were constructed by the groom and the male men in his family. A woman's hair was often decorated with feathers or beaded hides shaped as a current headband.

    Ceremonies

    • A water-washing ceremony might be integrated into your wedding to cleanse and purify both the bride and groom of feelings for past loves and washing away evil spirits to begin a new life together. Consider integrating ceremonial readings into the wedding that are common of Native American wedding ceremonies. Use caution because some wedding traditions are distinct to specific tribes and not all readings or ceremonies are necessarily interrelated among all Native Americans.

Native american traditions of marriage

Native american traditions of marriage

It's interesting:
"The bride and groom have asked me to make special mention of the bridesmaids who have done so much to help the day run so smoothly. They were charming and decorative and I know gave Linda all the support she needed. In fact you could say they added the finishing touch to a fairy tale wedding."

There are as many different Native American traditions of marriage as there are Native American tribes. Each tribe has its specific customs and rituals that are particular to that tribe only, however there are many aspects of Native American wedding rituals and marriage processes that they share in common. While each tribe differs they all share a common belief in the Great Spirit and the four elements of earth, sky, fire and water.

  1. Courtship

    • Each tribe had its own ways but in general courtship was able to begin after a girl had reached puberty and had gone through her particular tribe's adolescent rituals. Once they were ready to receive courtship, males could make offerings or leave symbolic gifts as an indication of a desire to marry. In some cases the girl could offer a gift such as cake to a male and if he accepted it meant he accepted marriage. Sometimes the union was arranged by the parents and involved gifts and bargaining. In most cases chastity was highly valued in girls before marriage.

    Singing

    • Singing or music was always an important accompaniment at most Native American ceremonies and weddings were no exception. Singing is the dominant form of musical expression in Native American culture with drums as a rhythmic accompaniment. Men would gather in circles around a drum and sing together. Love songs and poetry sung to the accompaniment of a flute was also a feature.

    Food

    • Like most weddings anywhere food is a key requirement. In most traditions it was an occasion for feasting and great preparations would be made before the day. Foods such as breads, venison and buffalo, beans, corn and many fruits and delicacies were common.

    Ceremony

    • The ceremony would be held in the evening and prayers would be said to the Great Spirit. In many tribes a love potion would be prepared with specially selected herbs and plants to bring forth a successful union. Bride and groom would dress in ceremonial clothing and in some tribes would have their hair woven together to signify lifelong union. In many tribes a special pipe would be prepared for the participants to smoke together.

How to irrigate a small vineyard of 24 vines

irrigate a small vineyard of 24 vines

It's interesting:
"Tom looks great on his wedding day doesn't he? I won't say it's funny to see ... Congratulations to Tom and Susan on their wedding. And since it's election week ..."

Learning to grow grapes as a backyard crop is a rewarding project from many perspectives. While tending grapes presents challenges in meeting the sun, water and nutrient needs of the vines in the micro-climates of each backyard, they pay off in high-quality fruit for your table. No matter the size of your backyard vineyard, irrigation of your grapes is key in keeping your grape crop healthy. Young vines require regular watering, while established grapes need about an inch of water per week in the summer growing season.

Things You'll Need

  • Paper/pen
  • Measuring tape
  • Garden hose
  • Soaker hose/caps, T-connectors, elbows
  • Filter
  • Pressure regulator
  • Timer

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a small map of your vineyard on paper. Measure out the distances of the hose spigot to the closest part of the vineyard to determine the length of garden hose to carry water to the site. Mark this on the drawing. Measure the other distances such as the length of the rows, the distance between rows and mark each of them down on the paper.

    • 2

Determine the length of soaker hose necessary to run down the rows, keeping in mind that the hoses will moisten the soil within a 2 to 3 foot width from the center of the hose. Count the number of T-connectors, caps, and elbows to complete the plan.

    • 3

Purchase the hose and connectors along with a filter and a pressure regulator, all available at larger garden centers or home improvement warehouses. Add on a timer if you are not often at home when the plants would be watered.

    • 4

Set up your system, laying out the hoses and attaching all the parts according to the manufacturer's instructions. Take the caps off the ends of the lines and turn on the water to purge the air from the system. Cap the lines and turn on the water. Water the vineyard as needed to supplement the rain.

Order of a catholic marriage ceremony

Order of a catholic marriage ceremony

It's interesting:
"The best way to get a wedding reception crowd on side is too say something nice about the bride ... You could also add that it's been a wonderful wedding so far."

Universally considered to be the spiritual bonding of a couple, marriage ceremonies have different aspects that differ greatly depending on the cultural norms. Though varying upon social and culture groups, many weddings have similar components like the exchange of vows. Wedding ceremonies in the Catholic faith have numerous steps that occur in a well-organized order.

  1. Introductory Rites

    • Introductory rites begin with the entrance ceremony in which the assembly stands while an entrance hymn is sung. The wedding party procession occurs here as well. Following the entrance rite is the greeting, penitential rite and singing of the Gloria which begins with "Glory to God in the highest". The last part of the introductory rites is the opening prayer when the priest invites the assembly of guests to pray and offer prayers for the bride and groom.

    Liturgy of the Word

    • Six parts comprise the liturgy of the word beginning with the first reading from the Old Testament. Next is the responsorial psalm that is followed by the second reading. During the gospel acclamation, the assembly stands and the "Alleluia" acclimation verse is usually used. A deacon or the priest proclaims "The Gospel of the Lord" and a homily drawn from Scripture readings.

    Rite of Marriage

    • Next is the rite of marriage which consists of the address and statement of intentions, consent and exchange of vows and blessings and exchange of rings. After the rings are exchanged and the kiss takes place, the rite of marriage is closed by the general intercessions and procession of faith.

    Liturgy of the Eucharist

    • Though other marital ceremonies end after the kiss, a Catholic wedding continues with the liturgy of the Eucharist. Bread and wine representing the body and blood of Jesus are prepared at the altar. The Eucharistic prayer is said along with a memorial acclimation and a great "Amen" sung by the assembly.

    Communion Rite

    • During the communion rite, the Lord's Prayer is said or sung, a nuptial blessing is given and a sign of peace, such as a handshake or a kiss, is exchanged. Following the sign of peace is the breaking of the bread and actual communion procession.

    Concluding Rite

    • The last step in the order of a Catholic wedding ceremony is the concluding rite which begins with the blessing that the priest says over the married couple. The bride and groom are invited to kiss again after the blessing. Once the blessing has concluded, the priest dismisses the assembly of guests and the couple, bridal party, priests and ministers are processed out of the church in a recessional that is often accompanied by a song.

The best indian wedding invitations

The best indian wedding invitations

It's interesting:
"Sorry if the speeches drag on. Wedding receptions can be a bit like an X Factor results show. You just want to skip through the talky bits to find out ..."

The best wedding invitations tip off the guests to the style of wedding the bride and groom are hosting. For an Indian wedding the invitations should reflect the culture, opulence and celebratory spirit of an Indian wedding. From rich colors to textured paper, an invitation can suggest to the guest that this will be a wedding not to miss.

  1. Style

    • An Indian wedding lasts for the entire day, is extravagant and elegant in every detail from the bride and groom's multiple outfits to the lavish menu. The invitations should reflect the style of the wedding. Use vibrant colors and custom paper to reflect the regal style of the celebration. Traditional Indian wedding etiquette suggests only a formal invitation should be sent as opposed to popular save-the-dates.

    Two Invitations

    • An Indian tradition dating from the days of arranged marriages is to send to two separate invitations --- one to the groom's guests and the other to the bride's guests. The invitations are sent to family and friends with no R.S.V.P.s. The tradition is to allow your invited guests to bring any number of guests they want. This "spread the word" informal invitation is socially accepted and practiced.

    Addressing Envelopes

    • According to etiquette maven Emily Post, formal invitation rules apply for addressing an Indian wedding invitation. The envelope is addressed with titles, first name, middle name(optional) and last name. If a middle name is included it is spelled out or omitted. No initials. Titles are the only word that is abbreviated.

    Colors

    • Traditionally, the invitations are maroon and have a Ganesha pictured somewhere on the invitation. The maroon color is a regal color and reflects the color red that will be worn by the bride and groom on the wedding day. Other gold and bright colors are seen as embellishments on the invitations. The Ganesha is a symbol for prosperity and happiness.

Myths on telling what gender your baby will be

Myths on telling what gender your baby will be

It's interesting:
"And for those of you who don't know, this special day in the lives of Dave and Sarah also happens to be Chinese New Year! Or, as they call it in China."

Most women begin guessing their baby's gender the moment they find out they're pregnant. While the only surefire way to predict a baby's sex is through amniocentesis or ultrasound, there are a number of myths and old wives' tales to give mom's a head start. These myths don't have any scientific backing -- but at least they have a 50 percent chance of being right.

  1. Mother's Condition and Behaviors

    • A mother's cravings, stomach shape and even her face are said to predict what gender a baby will be. For example, if a mother's pregnant belly hangs low, one myth predicts it's a boy- if it's high, the baby's a girl. Or if you carry the baby in the front of your tummy, it's a boy- a wide stomach predicts it's a girl. Another myth says if a mother craves sweets during her pregnancy, she's having a girl- sour and salty food cravings lean toward a boy. Finally, if a mother's face is round and full, she's having a girl. In actuality, these myths aren't based on any solid research.

    Baby's Heart Rate

    • There was a time when health professionals believed a baby's heart rate could predict gender. Most unborn babies' heart rates beat between 120 and 160 times each minute. According to legend, a faster heart rate, above 140 beats per minute, means the mother is having a girl. If the heart rate is slower, about 130 or below, she's having a boy. This theory has been debunked by professionals, as a baby's heart rate can vary from check-up to check-up.

    Drano Test

    • The pipe cleaning liquid Drano is said to help predict gender in one myth. For this test, expecting mothers should collect 2 to 3 ounces of urine first thing in the morning. Pour 2 tablespoons of Crystal Drano into the glass with the urine. If the mixture turns to a brownish color within 10 seconds, this myth predicts you're having a boy. If nothing happens within 10 to 15 seconds, you're said to be carrying a girl. While it sounds scientific, there is nothing in a woman's urine that will interact with Drano to predict gender.

    The Ring Test

    • This myth is said to predict your baby's gender by the movement of a necklace. Start with a necklace that has a heavy charm -- although some variations of the myth call for old jewelry or even your wedding ring strung on a strand of the father's hair. Whatever the object, hang it over the mother's belly. If the ring or charm moves in circles, the baby is a girl. If it moves back and forth, you're having a boy. Like many myths, there isn't any scientific backing.

    Chinese Gender Calendar

    • The Chinese Gender calendar, which was found in an ancient royal tomb outside Beijing, is said to be more than 90 percent accurate in predicting your baby's gender. All a mother needs to do is enter her age at conception and the month the baby was conceived into the chart. A graph will then tell you the baby's gender. On The Bump websites, expectant mothers can access the chart for free.

Homemade paint shakers

Homemade paint shakers

It's interesting:
"Sorry if the speeches drag on. Wedding receptions can be a bit like an X Factor results show. You just want to skip through the talky bits to find out ..."

Paint shakers can be used to combine two or more colors of paint evenly, to mix thinner into paint and to homogenize paints that have been left standing. Using spare parts you can build a homemade paint shaker.

  1. Larger Paint Shakers

    • Large paint shakers are good for gallon-sized cans of house paint. You can make such a mixer out of an old air compressor. Remove the piston from the air compressor and replace it with a wooden rod attached to a platform to which the cans are clamped. When the compressor is turned on, the platform moves rapidly up and down, mixing the paint.

    Smaller Shakers

    • You can make smaller paint shakers using an electric motor. A container is secured to an elliptical cam (a special oval-shaped gear or connector) which in turn is attached to the motor's drive shaft. As the motor turns, the elliptical cam moves the container rapidly up and down. The bottle or pint-sized can of paint is placed inside the container and the vibrations from the motor shake the paint to mix it.

    Tips on Finding Electric Motors

    • Many household devices have electric motors that can be removed and re-used in paint shakers. Examples include hair clippers, small fans and some motorized toys. A discarded toy car, for example, could have its wheels removed and an elliptical cam attached to the motor's drive shaft which could then agitate a container.

The history of black wedding dresses

The history of black wedding dresses

It's interesting:
"Paul is caring, he's generous, he's sensitive… in fact I don't even know him anymore. Linda has changed my best friend. Actually, I should thank you Linda. You've done in 18 months what I couldn't do in 18 years."

In the 1800s, brides often wore wedding dresses in everyday colors, such as green, pink, blue, burgundy, dark brown and black, according to the Vintage Wedding website. The bride wore the best dress she had, whatever the color. Black wedding dresses sometimes held a special significance.

Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Function

    • Dark and black wedding dresses were practical for brides to wear in the 1800s. A practical bride often chose black so she could wear the dress on many occasions---not just on her wedding day. It was easier to keep a black dress looking clean, especially along the bottom.

    Warning

    • In the 1800s, some people believed that wearing a black wedding dress was bad luck, according to the Vintage Wedding website. An old saying from those days spoke of wishing you could go back if you got married in black.

    Significance

    • Sometimes, a bride would wear a black wedding dress if she were marrying a widower. According to the Vintage Wedding website, the Goodwill Museum in Washington has a black wedding dress from 1870, worn by a 16-year-old girl who married a widower.

    Fun Fact

    • By the 1870s, women were beginning to wear white wedding dresses. By the 1880s, most women wore white or ivory, but some women still wore black.
