Icing is the essential decorator's tool, making cakes appear beautiful and delectable while adding to the flavor of the cake. There are many different types of icing that can be used for decoration. Fondant is also a type of icing. Different varieties of icing, like buttercream, royal, poured sugar and glaze, all have different textures, flavors and uses in cake and cookie decoration. Many cake decorators use a combination of icings to embellish a cake to bring out the theme of the decoration.

      Icing is a combination of sugar and a liquid that can be either butter or water or even sugar syrup. The cake decorator has to choose the right icing for the cake so that the finishes come out well. Some icings remain soft, some harden after drying and some are great for piping.

      Buttercream is a popular icing that is made with a combination of butter, sugar and flavoring. It is good for smoothing over cakes, piping designs and flowers, and writing.

      Royal icing is used for making flowers, piping decorations and for decorating cookies and gingerbread houses. It dries on contact with air and has a sweet flavor.

    Fondant

    • A cake covered with fondant.

      Fondant is also a type of icing that is used in different ways to ice cakes. Fondant has a clay-like consistency that can be shaped to make flowers and decorations and also rolled out to cover cakes. Since it covers cakes completely and seals out air, fondant is also used to preserve fruitcakes.

      There are different types of fondant used in cake decorating. Rolled fondant is the traditional fondant used to roll out and cover cakes smoothly. It has to be kneaded like dough and has to be covered during use to prevent drying out.

      Quick-pour fondant is made over the stove and poured over cakes and petit fours to dry and harden, making a satin-smooth finishing possible over baked goods. Leftover fondant can be reheated and used again.

    Difference Between Fondant and Buttercream Icing

    • Buttercream iced cupcakes

      Buttercream is quick and easy to make and spreads easily. It is the perfect icing to use for beginner cake decorators. It stays well at room temperature and can be colored using liquid or gel food colors.

      The consistency of buttercream can be varied depending on the use. Stiff buttercream can be used to pipe flowers and borders. Slightly thinned out buttercream can be used to spread smoothly over cakes and pipe lace-like decorations to cover cake surfaces.

      Fondant can be made at home, but many decorators prefer the easy availability of ready-made fondant. Professional cake decorators like the ease of use and the beautiful finish that fondant gives to cakes. Marshmallow fondant is a standard recipe used by wedding cake decorators who like its pliability and flavor.

      The consistency of fondant depends on the recipe used. Unlike buttercream icing that can be thinned out using water, fondant has to be made from scratch from a different recipe if you want a different consistency.

    Difference Between Royal Icing and Fondant

    • Fondant is sweet and melts in the mouth. It is also used in candies, where it acts like the center base on which different toppings are poured to make candy. Fondant tints easily, but gel colors are preferred so that the consistency and setting time is not altered.

      Fondant remains soft after decorating and does not dry out completely. It might form a crust, but never dries hard.

      On the other hand, royal icing dries to bone-hard consistency, becoming brittle and easy to crack. Royal icing decorations have to be handled carefully to prevent breaking. Exposure to moisture makes royal icing soft and gummy, spoiling decorations and altering the consistency.

      Royal icing is easy to pour and dries very fast. It is easy to work with compared to fondant, which needs practice and expertise.

    Tools for Decorating

    • When working with any type of icing, you must have clean, moisture-free tools so that the icing flavor and consistency are not altered.

      Fondant has to be rolled using a rolling pin. Different cutters and rollers can also be used to give embossed or imprinted effects. A fondant smoother is also helpful to remove bubbles and bumps from the cake after rolling out the fondant and placing it over the cake.

      Fondant does not use the tips and piping bags that are used for buttercream and royal icing. To use buttercream or royal icing, you need a piping bag to pour the icing in, and different tips and nozzles to produce designs and flowers. The shape and design of piped decorations depends highly on the piping expertise of the decorator.

Most people believe the only way to launder a wedding dress is to send it to the dry cleaners. Depending on the materials used in the dress, this is not necessarily true. Since weddings are big business, you can save quite a bit if you launder your wedding dress yourself.

  • Painter's tape
  • Mild dishwashing liquid
  • Toothbrush
  • Cup of water
  • Washcloth
  • Dry towel
  • Laundry detergent for delicates
  • Blow dryer
  • Steamer

Instructions

  1. Spot Clean

      Examine your dress for any stains, spots or smudges and put a piece of painter's tape on any of these that you find.

      Put a drop of dishwashing liquid on a toothbrush, then dip it in a cup of water.

      Gently scrub a spot or stain.

      Repeat the second and third steps until you have completely removed the stain.

  1. Attire

    • Catholic weddings are generally semi-formal. Men should wear a shirt and tie (if not a suit), while women should wear dresses, skirts or dress slacks. When dressing for a Catholic wedding, female guests should keep in mind that it is proper etiquette to dress modestly. For example, women may choose a stylish shawl to cover their shoulders while inside the church. They could wear a tank top under a sundress to make the neckline a little less revealing. Gather a large strand of hair in the front on the opposite side of the part. Twist the section of hair, loosely at first, toward the back of the ear, then twist it tightly as you near the back of the neck. Topsy turvy cakes typically have three layers, each looking as if it is sitting at an angle. But there is a trick to making this cake so that you don't have to balance any layers on top of each other. Making a topsy turvy cake does not have to be complicated, but the construction can take a while, so be sure to give yourself plenty of time to put it together.

Things You'll Need

  • 3 round cakes, 9-inch
  • 3 round cakes, 7-inch
  • 3 round cakes, 5-inch
  • Refrigerator
  • Parchment paper
  • Pen
  • Scissors
  • Serrated knife
  • Frosting
  • Cake platter

Instructions

      Place one 9-inch round cake onto your cake platter. Put a layer of frosting on the top of the cake and stack your second 9-inch round cake on top of it. Frost the top of the second cake.

      Take your third 9-inch round cake and cut it diagonally through its center from one top edge to the opposite edge on the bottom. Both cake slices should be thick at one side and narrow on the other.

      Place one of your cake slices on the top of the stacked 9-inch round cakes. Frost the slice.

      Place your second slice on top of the first one so that the thick ends are both on the same side, creating a slanted top. This will create the first layer of your cake.

      Repeat the same process with the three 7-inch round cakes and the three 5-inch round cakes. You will be left with your second and third layers of the topsy turvy cake.

      Place all three layers into the refrigerator for an hour so that they are thoroughly chilled.

      Remove your 9-inch layer from the refrigerator and center your 7-inch cake pan on the top of the cake.

      Using a serrated knife, carefully cut a border around the cake pan. Remove the cake pan from the layer.

      Cut a well out of the top 9-inch cake layer that is level and flat. Your 7-inch cake will sit inside this well. You will need to remove more cake out of the steep side of the layer than out of the narrow side so that the next layer fits.

      Repeat this process with your 7-inch layer and 5-inch pan.

      Frost the tops of your 9-inch and 7-inch cake layers and stack the cakes.

Central to all ceremonies is the Sapta Padi, where the couple circle a ceremonial fire and recite seven specific vows to each other. Hindu wedding ceremonies often involve hundreds of people and last for days.

Instructions

      Arrive at the wedding canopy, called the mandap, along with family and friends. The bride's family ceremoniously greets the bridegroom.

      Observe the priest as he performs several rituals to sanctify the ceremonial area. A prayer to Lord Ganesh serves to remove any obstacles and troubles during the ceremony. A prayer to Lord Varuna helps purify the ceremonial area. The priest requests a blessing from all the Gods and Goddesses to bless the couple with a happy married life.

      Hold the bride's hand in your right palm once she is brought to the ceremonial area and offered to you by the bride's father. A white cloth curtain may seperate the bride and groom. The couple may sit on a swing to ward off evil spirits. A holy gold thread, the thali, is blessed by the audience.

      Place the thali around the bride's neck and tie three knots. A garland, which is a loop of white cotton, may be placed around the shoulders of the groom and bride. The priest blesses the couple and they are now married. Rice, sandalwood or herbs may be offered to Agni, the god of Fire.

      Circle the sacred fire four times with the bride. This is symbolic for the four goals of humans: virtue, wealth, family and enlightenment. The priest provides additional blessings.

      First, start collecting your jars and tell your friends and family to do the same. Your cheap wedding centerpieces will be unique and memorable if you use a variety of sizes, shapes, and heights, so save everything from mayonnaise jars to baby food jars! Glass is preferable as it looks nicer than plastic.

      Second, you'll need to peel off the labels. Try a solution that's half vinegar and half water, or purchase some product from your home improvement store - it's usually very affordable. Spray it on the label, let it soak for several minutes, and then use a straight edge to peel off the glue.

      Third, you want to wrap the neck of the jar with some wide and festive ribbon or trim. Try your fabric supply store for the best choices.
