How to get married in the city hall of los angeles california

get married in the city hall of los angeles, california

It's interesting:
"It seems that just a couple of days before the wedding, he chose a tall, striking blonde behind his fiances back. He voted for Boris Johnson on Thursday…"

Many couples have a romantic idea to run off to City Hall one morning to get married in a private, no-frills ceremony. However, because the county of Los Angeles presides over the registrar rather than the city doing so itself, getting married at the Los Angeles City Hall is a less than straightforward affair. Though it is possible to get married at the Los Angeles City Hall, a more common spot to hold such a wedding in Los Angeles is the County Clerk's office.

Things You'll Need

  • Photo identification
  • Proof of termination of previous marriages
  • Witnesses

Instructions

    • 1

Apply for a marriage license at the Los Angeles Registrar Recorder. You will need to produce your current identification and proof that any previous marriages have ended. Depending on your time of arrival, the license will be issued that same day, usually after an hour. Marriages are performed at each site by volunteer officiants, but you are free to take the license elsewhere to marry. The license is valid for 90 days.

    • 2

Contact a local councilperson, judge or magistrate to see if he is willing to perform a marriage ceremony for you and your fiancé-e. If you are unsure where to begin looking for officiants, ask the workers at the Registrar Recorder for a list of eligible people.

    • 3

Contact the city hall's representative to see which rooms are available for use and make an appointment at the time you want to wed. Ask if you are allowed to bring any guests with you, if this is your intention.

    • 4

Write your own wedding vows, if you are so inclined.

    • 5

Hold your marriage ceremony. Be sure to bring a witness with you so that she might sign the marriage license.

How to write a wedding announcement for a destination wedding

write a wedding announcement for a destination wedding

It's interesting:
"Learn connect what's happing in the news to the theme of weddings or marriage, the stereotypical characteristics of a groom, the duties of a best man, ..."

Sending wedding announcements after your destination wedding allows you to inform friends and family about your marriage without offending them due to not inviting them. When writing a wedding announcement for a destination wedding, the wording should inform recipients of your marriage as well as note where you were married so it's clear they weren't invited because of the location, and not because you didn't want them there.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine who will be announcing the wedding, as the announcement will come from that person. If you and your betrothed are paying for the wedding, then the two of you will announce your wedding. If either or both sets of parents will pay for the wedding, then the announcement can come from them.

    • 2

Decide on the tone of your wedding announcement. For a formal wedding, choose traditional stationery and wording. For an informal wedding, choose casual, conversational wording for your announcement.

    • 3

Write your announcement. Include your name and your fiance's name and the date and place of the marriage, much like you would an actual invitation. The bride's maiden name is listed on announcements.

If the bride's parents are announcing the wedding in a formal, traditional way, then the announcement could read:

"Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Earl Lincoln

      have the honor of announcing

      the marriage of their daughter

      Emily Anne

      to

      Mr. Joshua Edward Jenkins,

      Saturday, the fifteenth of June,

      Two thousand (year),

      (Church or Location Name),

      Maui, Hawaii."

If you are announcing your own wedding in a casual tone, you could write something such as:

      "Emily Lincoln and Joshua Jenkins

      are happy to announce

      we are now

      Mr. and Mrs. Jenkins.

      We exchanged vows

      Saturday, the fifteenth of June,

      Two thousand (year),

      Niagara Falls, New York."

Tips &- Warnings

  • Prepare your announcements before you leave for your wedding. Sending them out from your location the day after the wedding ensures that they will be received in a timely fashion and will include a local postmark, confirming your destination wedding location. If you are not able to do this yourself , and if a trustworthy friend or relative has accompanied you, then assign the job to her or him.

  • If you wait until you return home to send the announcement, then include a picture or some other token from the wedding.

  • If you are planning on having a traditional or casual reception after returning home, then include the invitation with your announcement.

  • Don't send announcements before the wedding. By definition, announcements are used to announce the marriage or wedding, which would be done after the event.

  • Don't wait too long to send out the announcements. Ideally, they should be sent within a couple of days of the marriage. Send them out within two weeks, at the latest.

How to get married in oklahoma

get married in oklahoma

It's interesting:
"I want to welcome each of you to the wedding today. It is a true testament to the bride and groom that you have taken time from your busy schedule to come and witness their marriage. I have never seen a more beautiful bride than Linda, and Paul looks just plain proud, doesn’t he?"

Wedding chuppah directions

Wedding chuppah directions

It's interesting:
"Just as the happy couple wanted, this is a lovely, small, intimate gathering of close friends and family – so could someone please tell me why I’m here. Oh, that’s right, to make a speech, so here goes …"

Jewish weddings include many beautifully symbolic traditions. One especially beautiful tradition is speaking your vows beneath the chuppah, or wedding canopy. Ranging from simple cloth held aloft above the betrothed couple, to intricate and ornate structures with specific and personalized flourishes and touches, a chuppah has long been a standard part of a Jewish wedding. You can make this custom even more special by constructing your own chuppah. It can be surprisingly easy to do, and both bride and bridegroom are certain to cherish the item for years to come.

Things You'll Need

  • 4 wooden poles, between 7 and 8 feet tall
  • wood stain or paint
  • varnish or lacquer
  • 4 metal grommets
  • 4 bolts
  • 4 washers
  • fabric

Instructions

  1. Preparing the Poles

    • 1

Measure out four identical wooden poles that are at least one inch across and seven to eight feet tall.

    • 2

Sanding the poles to a smooth texture is an important step.

Sand each pole until it is smooth.

    • 3

Drill a hole into the top of each pole that is long and wide enough to accommodate your bolts.

    • 4

The poles can be any color you wish.

Paint or stain the poles the desired shade. Sand and repeat until the color is even and the texture smooth.

    • 5

If using a stain, coat each pole in a varnish or lacquer to insure that it is smooth and waterproof.

    Preparing the Canopy

    • 6

You can use any fabric that you wish to make your chuppah a personal statement

After determining how many people will be standing beneath the chuppah, and how large of a space it will need to cover, carefully hem the edges of your fabric.

    • 7

In each corner of the fabric, cut a hole, and install a fabric grommet large enough to accommodate the shaft of the bolt that you will be using to attach the fabric to the poles.

    • 8

Attach any decorative trimmings that you wish to add to the edges of the fabric, such as fringe or ribbon.

    • 9

Insert a bolt into a washer, feed it through one of the grommets in the fabric, then affix the bolt into a pole. Repeat for all four poles.

Tips &- Warnings

  • If you wish, you can use other materials to make your poles, such as fishing poles if you both enjoy fishing, or intricately carved sticks if that is a good reflection of you as a couple. You may also choose to wrap your poles in ribbon.

  • The fabric you use can be embroidered with your names and the date, or any verse or phrase that you wish. The fabric can then be detached after the ceremony, and hung in your home as a keepsake.

  • If you will not have attendants hold the poles during the ceremony, you can cement the poles into large flower pots, then plant flowers or greens around them to hold your chuppah upright.

Common wedding readings

Common wedding readings

It's interesting:
"Just as the happy couple wanted, this is a lovely, small, intimate gathering of close friends and family – so could someone please tell me why I’m here. Oh, that’s right, to make a speech, so here goes …"

Weddings invite several opportunities for verbal expression. Readings at the ceremony and reception are commonplace and are given to support the bride and groom on their day. There are well-known readings you can use to support your speech or toast when you think that you cannot come up with the right thing to say yourself. Whether the readings are religious passages or not, poems, or excerpts from books, the words always express the common denominator of love.

  1. Religious

    • The reading from 1 Corinthians 13:4-8a in the Bible is commonly read during wedding ceremonies. It reads: "Love is patient and kind- love is not jealous or boastful- it is not arrogant or rude. Love does not insist on its own way- it is not irritable or resentful- it does not rejoice at wrong, but rejoices in the right. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends." Additional popular religious readings are Ruth 1:16-17, Ecclesiastes 4:9-12 and the Song of Solomon, 2:10-13.

    Poetry

    • Several excerpts from William Shakespeare's play "Romeo and Juliet" can be used during a wedding. The passage that begins: "My bounty is as boundless as the sea, My love as deep- the more I give to thee..." is commonly used. Wise words also come from Wilferd Peterson in his poem "The Art of Marriage," which begins, "The little things are the big things. It is never being too old to hold hands." "Hinterhof" by James Fenton, "White Writing" by Carol Ann Duffy, and "Match" by Sophie Hannah are also well-liked choices.

    Cultural

    • Wedding readings can also be taken from a particular culture, especially if the bride and groom would like to celebrate their heritage. One verse of the Irish Wedding Blessing, for example, begins, "May God be with you and bless you. May you see your children's children."

    Tips

    • Wedding readings don't need to come solely from a religious text or a poem about love. They can be lines heard in a movie, lyrics to a favorite song or a paragraph from a book. Thumb through books by your favorite writers, peruse the Internet for quotations or watch a few romantic movies for great dialogue. In "When Harry Met Sally," Harry says, "I came here tonight because when you realize you want to spend the rest of your life with somebody, you want the rest of your life to start as soon as possible." The words to Etta James' "At Last" and the Rascal Flatts' "Bless the Broken Road" are common song lyrics to be used as readings.

How to get married in a church

get married in a church

It's interesting:
"Normally, an outdoor spring wedding is a risk. Will there be snow? Will it be cold? Will it be hot? Will it rain? Thankfully, today the risk paid off with no precipitation, perfect weather, and a beautiful backdrop to see the union of Paul and Linda."

The most important day in someone's life is their wedding (for many people). This is a day to go all out. If you've thought about your wedding most of your life, you have most likely thought of where it would occur. People who hold high regard for religion most often have a desire to be married in church. The church they currently attend is usually the first choice. It is not difficult to be married in church as you will see below.

Things You'll Need

  • Decorations
  • Food and drink for the reception
  • Wedding cake

Instructions

    • 1

Decide which church you want to use to be married. If you are currently attending church services, that church is the first choice that pops into your mind. Ask the minister, pastor, priest or one of the church officers if you can reserve the time of your wedding to be held in the auditorium.

    • 2

Select another church that you like if you are not a member of a church near your location. Upon finding this church, go in person to speak to the minister or other representative. Ask for permission to marry in the church on the date of your wedding. Be sure there is no doubt that you have it reserved before leaving this meeting.

    • 3

Bear in mind that some religions will not allow non-members to marry in their church. It is best to check with Lutheran, Catholic and Anglican religions and the specific church if you are not a member but want to get married there. If you find one church who agrees and others who do not, you might want to talk with a religious leader in your faith to see if your marriage is binding in the eyes of the church.

    • 4

Hold your marriage ceremony in a church. This shows all who attend that you want to base your entire marriage on the closeness you have with each other and God. You are beginning a new life and, since you are wondering about getting married in a church, you want to do it right.

    • 5

Take into consideration you will have to follow rules and wishes of the church you are getting married in. If you are a member, then you already know them. If you are not, please ask. One example is what type of music do you want to use? Some churches do not allow musical instruments and only want singing voices to be heard. Others allow taped music or musical instruments.

    • 6

Stay true to yourself. For most people, the location of the wedding is not the issue. You are marrying your true love, then this should be the happiest day of your life.

Tips &- Warnings

  • Remember the reception. Reserve the fellowship room for the reception unless you plan to hold it elsewhere.

  • There are churches who will allow you to get married in their building. Even if you run across a lot of negative answers, you will find a positive one sooner or later.

  • Don't forget to ask if there is a charge for using the church facilities for your wedding.

Recommended wedding readings

Recommended wedding readings

It's interesting:
"I know they have both put a tremendous amount of effort in to the planning of this wedding, and can only hope that, apart from this speech, everything has ..."

Wedding readings can be prayers, quotations, book excerpts, poems or even song lyrics. Some wedding readings focus on the couple, while others speak about the blending of two families or focus solely on the bride. Readings can be repeated by the officiant of the wedding or by a family member. They can be read during the ceremony, before the couple takes their vows, or as a toast during the reception.

  1. Poems

    • The poem "She Walks in Beauty" by Lord Byron is a common reading at a wedding, as it describes a beautiful woman. It begins, "She walks in beauty, like the night of cloudless climes and starry skies, and all that's best of dark and bright meet in her aspect and her eyes, thus mellowed to that tender light which heaven to gaudy day denies." The poem "On Marriage" by Kahlil Gibran is often read at weddings as well. It begins, "You were born together, and together you shall be forevermore. You shall be together when the white wings of death scatter your days." It continues to say, "Love one another, but make not a bond of love: Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls. Fill each other's cup, but drink not from one cup."

    Sonnets

    • Sonnets, particularly those by the ever-romantic William Shakespeare, are commonly read during wedding ceremonies or receptions. Sonnet 18 begins, "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate: Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May and summer's lease hath all too short a date." In Sonnet 116, Shakespeare begins, "Let me not to the marriage of true minds admit impediments. Love is not love which alters when it alteration finds or bends with the remover to remove." Shakespeare then writes, "Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks, but bears it out, even to the edge of doom."

    Prayers and Blessings

    • A common prayer that's read at weddings is by Bud Henry Bowmen. It says, "Help them to hug each other often, talk and laugh a lot. Help them to continue to enjoy each other as they did when they first met." The rest of the prayer asks God to help the couple love, respect and enjoy each other. The Hebrew wedding prayer begins, "Blesses art thou, O Lord our God, King of the universe, who hath created joy and gladness, bridegroom and bride, mirth and exultation, pleasure and delight, love and brotherhood, peace and friendship."

    Scripture

    • Readings taken directly from the Bible are popular in either Jewish or Christian marriage ceremonies. A Jewish marriage will most likely select a passage from the Old Testament, which is the Hebrew section of the Bible. Christian or mixed ceremonies would have readings from either the Old Testament or the New Testament. Often, more than one reading is selected from the Bible. The Song of Solomon 2:10-13 says, "Arise, my darling, my beautiful one, and come along. For behold, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone, the flowers have already appeared in the land." I Corinthians 13:1-13 begins, "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs."

The best wedding readings

The best wedding readings

It's interesting:
"Now, I think you'll agree, after seeing the amount of free booze available at this wedding, that it's a good job it's a Bank Holiday this weekend. And if you do ..."

The best wedding readings greatly depend on the couple's personal preference and overall desires. Some couples want to focus on religion and read quotes from the Bible or religious poems and others want to share their romance for one another by sharing romantic readings. There are also those who want to share inspirational quotes from famous authors or poets. The best wedding readings are those that reflect the couple's personal relationship and beliefs.

  1. Religious Readings

    • Quotes from the Bible and religious passages can offer some of the best wedding readings- especially for those with a strong religious background. For many couples, getting married is not only a commitment to one another, but also to God. Some Bible verses for weddings include 1 Corinthians 7: 1-16, 1 Peter 4:8 and Matthew 7: 24-27.

    Romantic Poetry

    • Love poetry can be some of the best readings for weddings. Some famous poets that have written romantic wedding readings include William Shakespeare, William Butler Yeats, George Eliot and Anne Finch. The poem should represent the commitment and love felt for one another.

    Inspirational Quotes

    • Choosing an inspirational quote to have a minister read can be the perfect start to a new beginning. Couples should choose something that they can both find inspiration in and live by from that day forward. Some great inspirational quotes were written by authors like Robert Browning, Martin Luther and Emily Bronte.

    Homemade Readings

    • Some of the best wedding readings are those that come from the heart. Writing up a homemade poem or speech can be the best reading of the entire wedding ceremony. Everyone loves hearing a personal testimonial from the bride or groom.

The invention of glitter

The invention of glitter

It's interesting:
"You know, I’ve been to lots of great weddings, but today may have been the best. The small, ornate chapel – the beautiful music – the sincere words that Paul and Linda wrote themselves. Ladies and gentlemen, we all witnessed something very special."

Glitter adds sparkle to countless products, including designer cosmetics, clothing fabrics and Christmas ornaments. The world may have never known the dazzle of glitter if a New Jersey cattle rancher had not discovered a mechanical process for glitter production.

  1. Inventor

    • Henry Ruschmann was a cattle rancher who lived on a farm in Bernardsville, New Jersey. Ruschmann dabbled as a machinist. This hobby led to his accidental discovery of a method to create the tiny, colorful fragments that became known as glitter.

    Discovery

    • In 1934, Ruschmann discovered a technique that used a machine to precision cut different colored plastic films to produce large quantities of particles. The resulting, sparkling product was glitter. Ruschmann's invention led him to start a glitter-production business.

    Company

    • Ruschmann founded Meadowbrook Inventions. The family owned company, which remains in business, stands on the grounds of the family's still-operating cattle farm. Meadowbrook Inventions is the biggest manufacturer of glitter in the world. The company strives to remain in the forefront of glitter innovation with an ever-expanding list of glitter products, such as glitter-infused plastics and shimmering boat paints.

What music to play at a wedding ceremony

What music to play at a wedding ceremony

It's interesting:
"I have been for months trying to write a wedding speech, I wish I'd found this site sooner. It's going to ... You can find speech material to suit any style of wedding."

Wedding ceremony music should reflect the bride and groom's personalities as well as the overall atmosphere they're trying to create. Wedding music can range from very formal and traditional to more informal and modern. When choosing music for the wedding ceremony, it is important to keep the wedding venue in mind and select music that is appropriate for that setting.

  1. Hymns

    • For a traditional church wedding, religious hymns are appropriate and may even be expected by the clergy and wedding guests. Hymns may be performed by the church's own musicians or you may be able to invite your own musicians to perform them during the ceremony. The wedding guests can refer to the church hymnals or your wedding program to sing along. Hymns that are commonly used at wedding ceremonies include "Amazing Grace," "Ave Maria" and "On Eagles' Wings."

    Acoustic Love Songs

    • Hire a musician or invite a musical friend to perform acoustic love songs during the wedding ceremony. Choose songs that are meaningful to you and your partner and that can easily be performed with an acoustic guitar only. For example, "I Will" by The Beatles or "This Magic Moment" by The Drifters are both songs about love that can be played fairly easily on the guitar. For large venues, mic the guitar and vocals so they can be heard.

    Classical

    • Choose classical pieces that you feel convey beauty or love and hire classical musicians to perform them during the ceremony. For example, if you enjoy Pachelbel's "Canon in D," hire a string trio or a quartet to perform it during the ceremony. Trios and quartets can be made up of a variety of instruments, so choose the combination you find most pleasing. For example, a harpist, cellist and violinist makes up a particularly melodic trio.

    Modern

    • For a non-traditional wedding ceremony that takes place in a non-religious venue, modern pop, rock or hip hop music can give your wedding a fun-loving, laid-back atmosphere. If you are a couple that doesn't like to take yourselves too seriously, choose your favorite modern songs to have playing during the ceremony. For example, you could play the hip hop song "Let's Get Married" by Jagged Edge as you walk down the aisle. If you choose to play modern music during the wedding ceremony, it is important to know your audience well to ensure that everyone will be comfortable with the lighthearted approach.

How to paint with jewel tones

paint with jewel tones

It's interesting:
"'It was two days before the wedding and I finally sat down to write my toast. Low and ... Everyone at the wedding said it was the best toast they had ever heard.' ..."

The vivid color of precious jewels, such as ruby, sapphire and emerald, can immediately transform a mediocre room into a rich and elegant space. Prior to painting any room with a jewel tone, however, understand that these colors are typically fairly dark and can make a small space appear even smaller. Therefore, it is important to choose a larger room to work with, or to accent the darker hues with softer, lighter ones. Painting a jewel-toned accent wall is often enough to make a huge statement and allows you to experiment with lighter colored accessories as well.

Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • 3-inch paintbrush
  • Paint roller
  • Paint tray
  • Painter's tape or masking tape
  • Drop cloths or old sheets
  • Paint strainer
  • Bucket (to strain paint)
  • Stir stick
  • Paint can opener

Instructions

    • 1

Select the best jewel-toned paint color for your space. A highly energetic ruby red or peacock blue, for example, typically works well in the larger, common areas of the home, like the living room or library. A deeper, intense amethyst or topaz, however, often functions best when used to spice up a smaller space, such as a bedroom or bathroom.

    • 2

Set up the room by removing all furniture and light fixtures before covering the floor with drop cloths. Use the painter's tape to cover any areas of the wall that will not be painted, including trim work, baseboards and vent registers.

    • 3

Open the paint can, stir the paint and strain it into the bucket if necessary.

    • 4

Pour a small amount of paint into the paint tray and cover the paint roller by gently rolling it back and forth on the tray. Less is more when it comes to painting with intense jewel tones- you can always add more color in a second coat if necessary.

    • 5

Paint the walls with the roller, leaving the hard to reach areas for the 3-inch paintbrush. Wait 24 hours and repeat- it is always best to apply two coats when painting with darker, more intense jewel-toned colors.

Tips &- Warnings

  • When choosing a jewel tone, consider using the colors of natural gemstones or those found in a peacock feather for inspiration.

  • Select other jewel-toned items and accessories to complement the new wall color.

  • Stir sticks and paint can openers are typically available for free at local hardware stores.

  • Paint fumes can be toxic, so ensure that the room to be painted is well ventilated.

  • Wear old clothing- jewel tones are typically quite dark and can easily ruin clothes if staining occurs.

How to assemble wedding invitations with tissue

assemble wedding invitations with tissue

It's interesting:
"At the wedding rehearsal yesterday evening, I had the pleasure of talking with Linda’s close friends. They talked about how she’s the friend they turn to when they need to vent over a foolish boyfriend or for advice on land the job of their dreams. They also said she has some pretty sweet moves on the dance floor. So let’s see them!"

With all the cards, tissue and envelopes that come with wedding invitations, it can be challenging to assemble them the correct way. Once you determine the correct order of these items, assembly of your invitations will go much faster. Brides once used tissue paper to protect the printing, but it is no longer necessary because most invitations are laser printed. However, brides have embraced this tradition, using tissue paper in formal invitations or in invitations meant to look more expensive.

Things You'll Need

  • Wedding invitations
  • Tissue
  • Invitation envelopes
  • Stamps

Instructions

    • 1

Place the invitation with the printing facing up on the table.

    • 2

Put the tissue on top of the invitation.

    • 3

Put reception card, if there is one, on top of the tissue, with the printed side facing up.

    • 4

Tuck the response card underneath the flap of the response envelope, and place it on top of the reception card, with the printed side facing up. If there is no reception card, place it on top of the tissue.

    • 5

Place a map of the wedding and reception site on top of the response card and envelope if you are including them in your invitation.

    • 6

Put the stack of cards into the inner envelope with the folded edge going in first and the printed sides facing the back of the envelope.

    • 7

Put the inner envelope, the one with the invitation and response cards, inside the outer envelope. The front of the inner envelope should face the back of the outer envelope so that when you open the outer envelope, you see the guest's name.

Tips &- Warnings

  • Address the inner envelopes and response envelopes before adding the invitations. If you write on them after they have cards in them, you may press too hard and make indentations on the cards.

  • Do not forget to stamp the response envelopes. Doing this ensures that the guests do not have to stamp their envelopes themselves. Pick a stamp that matches the one on the outside envelope.

  • Because the envelope may weigh more than a standard envelope because of all the inserts, take a completed invitation to the post office and have them weigh it. They can tell you exactly how much postage to put on the envelope. Square or other oddly shaped envelopes may also cost more because they cannot fit through the sorting machine and require hand stamping.

  • If you can find a decorative stamp reflecting love or marriage, it will add a nice touch to your invitations.

  • Be sure to mail out your invitations six or eight weeks before the wedding to allow guests plenty of time to respond.

  • Assemble the invitations on a large, cleared table with enough room to stack each item in the order in which they are put together. Try to keep it to a small group of people working because more people may lead to more confusion. Stamp each response envelope before you begin so that you do not have to stop the stacking and assembling to put a stamp on the envelope.

Hindu marriage ceremony with red threads around the wrist

Hindu marriage ceremony with red threads around the wrist

It's interesting:
"Tom looks great on his wedding day doesn't he? I won't say it's funny to see ... Congratulations to Tom and Susan on their wedding. And since it's election week ..."

A traditional Hindu wedding is a complex and lengthy ceremony blending rituals and traditions nearly 4,000 years old. More than a legal connection, a Hindu wedding not only unites the bride and groom, but also creates ties between families. Although many variations on the marriage ceremony exist, a common tradition involves the tying of a red thread around the wrists of the bride and groom, or the groom alone, to ward off evil influences that might threaten the couple on this important day.

  1. An Ancient Tradition

    • The traditional Hindu marriage ceremony draws on the customs and rituals of an ancient society, with some adaptations to modern life. Usually performed in Sanskrit, the ceremony may now be conducted in both Sanskrit and English. Although wedding traditions vary depending on location and other cultural factors, many aspects of the ceremony are shared by all, reflecting a common spiritual and philosophical foundation. Rituals of purification, dedication and protection from evil accompany all parts of the wedding, from pre-wedding preparations to the ceremony itself.

    Preparation for the Wedding

    • Pre-wedding rituals are dedicated to purifying the bride and groom and protecting them from harm. Both spouses-to-be may be bathed before the wedding in their own homes, a tradition that includes anointing with oils and fragrances such as sandalwood. The bride's palms and feet are decorated with Mahendi, designs created with henna. In Sikh wedding ritual, a red thread is tied to the right wrist of the groom and the left wrist of the bride at this time, as a protection from evil and bad omens.

    Wedding Traditions

    • Hindu wedding ceremonies have several parts, reflecting the spiritual and philosophical foundations of the ritual. The presence of God is invoked, as Lord Ganesh and other aspects of deity. In Southern Indian tradition, a red thread may be tied around the wrist of the groom during the ceremony to ward off evil influences. A sacred fire may be lit, and the couple make offerings of ghee and rice, walking around the fire four times. The groom gives the bride a necklace of gold to symbolize the start of a new life. The couple exchange vows and feed each other sweets to symbolize their first meal together, and the priest offers a blessing on their union.

    Significance

    • In Sanskrit, the word for marriage is vivaaha, or "what supports or carries," reflecting the view of marriage as a rite that creates a union that supports and sustains the couple and their families.

How to make royal blue food coloring

make royal blue food coloring

It's interesting:
"The happy couple have picked a beautiful sunny day to get married. It’s perhaps a little too hot for me in this suit though, but at least I now know how Chewbacca felt filming those desert scenes."

Though royal blue food coloring is available already made, the shade it produces often isn't the exact one that the baker wants. You can adjust the shade using two other colors. Buttercream icing is a great way to test out the dying abilities of dyes as it holds color well and is easy to handle. Bear in mind that dyed icing does darken as it sets so you'll want to make it a bit lighter than you really want.

Add this to my Recipe Box.

Things You'll Need

  • Prepared buttercream icing
  • Royal blue food coloring
  • Red food coloring
  • Purple food coloring

Instructions

    • 1

Place 1/2 cup of prepared buttercream icing in a small bowl. Add in drops of royal blue food coloring until you've reached 10 drops. Stir vigorously and place the icing in the refrigerator for an hour.

    • 2

Look at the color that the icing has settled into. Adjust the color recipe for the shade of royal blue you'd like. Try adding drops of red food color to brighten and drops of purple food coloring to deepen the hue. Start over with another 1/2 cup of icing if you want to start from scratch. Add in white icing to the dyed icing to lighten it.

    • 3

Mark down the number of drops per shade that you used for the 1/2 cup of icing. Adjust the number of drops according to how much icing is needed for your project- for example, four cups of icing will require twice as much of each drop.

What is the origin of the garter toss at weddings

What is the origin of the garter toss at weddings?

It's interesting:
"You may never see a wedding like this one again … not now that they've banned ... 26-Mar-201As an extra special wedding present, I've organized a ..."

The garter toss is a wedding tradition that dates back for centuries. The bride wears an elastic garter, usually lace, around one of her thighs. The groom reaches under her dress and removes the garter during the reception. He tosses it over his shoulder to the waiting single men. The man who catches it takes the garter and slides it up the leg of the woman who caught the bride's bouquet. It is said that the wedded couple will receive one year of good luck for each inch above the knee.

  1. Why the Garter?

    • The garter toss became common at weddings in 1500s. It was originally related to the concept of consummation of the marriage. The bridesmaids and groomsman would sneak up to the bride and groom's bedroom for proof that the deed was accomplished, so to speak. Then they would take an item of the bride's clothing for good luck. This was often the garter used to hold up the bride's stockings.

    Stocking Toss

    • The tossing tradition that went along with the garter evolved from another similar tradition involving stockings. Wedding guests would sit with their backs to the bride and groom and throw the couple's stockings over their shoulders as the couple slept in their marital bed. They believed that if the stockings hit the bride or the groom, the person who threw them, if of the opposite gender, would be the next person to get married.

    The Nineteenth Century

    • Brides and grooms soon decided that they didn't want extra company in their chambers, so the tradition evolved in the nineteenth century to that of the bride tossing her garter to the gentlemen in the wedding party before the end of the reception. The gentlemen could get quite violent competing for the garter and would sometimes tear at the bride's dress or even flip her upside down to take the garter off themselves before she had a chance.

    Modern Garter Toss

    • Finally, it was decided that the groom should get full rights to garter removal. This saved the bride potential injury and got the groom involved in the game. It was also a way of the groom expressing the idea that the bride was all his.

    Other Customs

    • A toss is just one way for the lucky guy to acquire the garter. In some cultures, the single men actually race, either on foot or on horses, to win the luck the garter is said to bring. The winner of the race gets the honor of pinning the garter to his hat.

    Considerations

    • The garter toss has fallen out of favor with many modern brides, especially in the United States. Some see it as a sexist custom or as too risqué- for a wedding where the whole extended family is present. Many couples have taken to instead tossing a spare garter the bride is not wearing or eliminating the toss from the reception altogether.

How to write dates on wedding invitations

write dates on wedding invitations

It's interesting:
"For those of you who are attending their first Jewish wedding, there may be some customs you're unfamiliar with. Like when Paul stepped on the glass at the end ..."

When writing out wedding invitations, many brides and grooms prefer to user proper wedding invitation etiquette. These etiquette rules govern the entire format of the invitation, including the structure, design and wording. The wedding invitation has two main functions: to announce your wedding and provide the wedding date. When announcing the time and date of your wedding, follow the etiquette rules for writing dates on wedding invitations.

Instructions

    • 1

Write out in full the day of the week on which your wedding will be held. Proper wedding etiquette states that you should not use any abbreviations on your wedding invitation. So, if your wedding is on a Saturday, begin by writing &ldquo-Saturday,&rdquo- followed by a comma.

    • 2

Insert one space and spell out the date, followed by the month for a formal wedding invitation. If your wedding date is August 18th, your invitation should read &ldquo-the eighteenth of August&rdquo- with a comma at the end. For the numbers 21 through 29 and 31, use a hyphen to connect the two words. For example, the number 28 would be written as &ldquo-twenty-eighth.&rdquo-

For an informal wedding invitation, spell out the month first and then the date. So, if the wedding is August 18th, write &ldquo-August eighteenth&rdquo- with a comma at the end.

    • 3

Spell out the year completely to finish the date line. If the wedding will be held in the year 2011, write out &ldquo-two thousand and eleven&rdquo- with no punctuation at the end.

For an informal wedding invitation, simply use the numbered year if desired. Rather than writing out &ldquo-two thousand and eleven,&rdquo- simply use &ldquo-2011&rdquo- with no punctuation at the end.

    • 4

Add the time of the wedding on the next line of text. Again, spell out all words completely, rather than using numbers or abbreviations. So, if the wedding is at 2 p.m., write out &ldquo-at two o&rsquo-clock in the afternoon.&rdquo- Depending on the time of the wedding, use &ldquo-in the morning/afternoon/evening&rdquo- as appropriate. CardSupply.com recommends writing &ldquo-at half-past six o&rsquo-clock&rdquo- for a 6:30 wedding and &ldquo-three quarters past six o&rsquo-clock&rdquo- for a 6:45 wedding. Punctuation at the end of the phrase is not necessary.

An informal wedding invitation should also have a completely spelled-out time line. However, it is not necessary to use the &ldquo-half-past&rdquo- or &ldquo-three quarters past&rdquo- phrases. Instead, a 6:30 pm wedding would simply be announced as &ldquo-six-thirty in the evening.&rdquo- Again, punctuation should not be included at the end of the line.

    • 5

Proofread the date and time lines carefully before printing and mailing out invitations. If your wedding is Saturday, August 18th, 2011 at 2:30 pm, your wedding invitation should read: &ldquo-Saturday, the eighteenth of August, two thousand and eleven / at half past two o&rsquo-clock in the afternoon.&rdquo- An informal wedding invitation might read: &ldquo-Saturday, August eighteenth, 2011 / at two-thirty in the afternoon.&rdquo-

How to decorate a short column wedding cake

decorate a short column wedding cake

It's interesting:
"There's something special about a church wedding, but most of us here have to admit that we rarely set foot inside a church these days. In fact ..."

The first image that pops into your mind of a wedding cake may be a multiple-tiered cake with five layers and elaborate columns supporting it. But modern brides and wedding planners can opt for a smaller, simpler wedding cake that may only have two layers supported by short, low columns. While the presentation of your wedding cake depends on how simple or extravagant you want to make it, a few items are commonly used to decorate wedding cakes. These items, like flowers, creative icing techniques and pearls, can make your wedding cake into a sophisticated work of edible art.

Things You'll Need

  • Knife
  • Icing
  • Icing dispenser
  • Scissors
  • Flowers
  • Platter
  • Paper doily

Instructions

    • 1

Place a paper doily on the center of your platter, and place the bottom layer of your cake on top of the doily. Center the doily and cake on the platter, and insert the columns to create the second tier of the cake.

    • 2

Ice the wedding cake with frosting, smoothing the frosting over all the layers of the cake. Use a knife to smooth out any uneven texture from the icing to create a uniform surface.

    • 3

Cut the stems off of flowers, leaving only the bloom. Flowers work well between the narrow gap between the short columns of a wedding cake, filling the space between the layers while setting off each layer from each other with the color and variety of shapes you choose for your flowers. Choose a variety of sizes of flowers, like tiny baby's breath sprays along with larger flowers like roses, carnations, sunflowers or lilies. Another option is to use violets, as these delicate, lavender flowers are edible. Rose petals are also edible, however it is best to remove the flowers from the cake before eating it.

    • 4

Place the flower blooms in between the two layers of cake with the blooms pointing outward. Place a few flowers along the base of the cake on the platter.

    • 5

Fill the icing dispenser with icing, and attach a decorator's tip to the end of the icing tube. A flat tip is useful for creating a ribbon-like icing decoration. Another idea is to use a star-shaped tip, which can be used to create small florets around the top edges of the circumference of the cake. A small, round icing tip can be used to write text on the cake, or to craft delicate details along the sides of the cake.

    • 6

Add decorative touches to the sides and tops of the wedding cake using the icing dispenser. You can draw flowers, dots, bows or waving lines using icing to give your cake a more sophisticated look.

Tips &- Warnings

  • Make sure to use flowers that do not wilt quickly when decorating your wedding cake.

  • Do not attach tiny objects to the icing of your cake that may prove to be choking hazards to your guests. The best course of action is to use objects that your guests can easily spot and remove before consuming their slice of cake.

  • Make sure to not use flowers that are known to be poisonous on your wedding cake, such as marigolds.

  • Remove all flowers and floral foliage before consuming the cake.

How to look like carrie bradshaw

look like carrie bradshaw

It's interesting:
"Linda is beautiful. She’s intelligent. She’s funny. She can cook like Nigella Lawson and she’s got the patience of a saint. Paul, I can say with my hand on my heart that you’re one of the luckiest men alive. And she writes a cracking Best Man speech as well."

Carrie Bradshaw from “-Sex and the City”- changed outfits nearly as much as she changed boyfriends. Try achieving the beauty of Carrie with these simple tips for makeup, health and (of course) fashion.

Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Hair product that brings out natural texture.
  • Creative fashion choices and designer brands.
  • Bold colors and patterns.
  • Funky accessories, hats and belts.
  • Beautifully constructed and sky-high heels.

Instructions

  1. Get Her Look

    • 1

Start creating Carrie’-s famous look by embracing the natural texture of your hair. Throughout the many seasons of “-Sex and the City," Carrie was seen with wild and curly locks, regardless of length or color. Try letting hair air dry and bring out waves with texturizing spray or moisturizing mousse.

    • 2

Understand the power of fashion by letting your outfits mimic your mood. Carrie was known for daring and bold fashion statements, and literally wore her emotions on her (haute couture) sleeve. Try empowering your personal fashion sense by abandoning your previous standby outfits and creating looks that change by the day…-or hour…-or feeling.

    • 3

Get bold with fashion choices by mixing and matching patterns. Try combining a floral scarf with a pinstripe pant, or pairing a Pucci print with a subtler pattern. Create contrast (not war) by experimenting with patterns in outfits, and making sure that everything truly works together.

    • 4

Accessorize like you’-ve never accessorized before. Carrie expressed herself by topping every outfit with a creative hat, wild necklace, daring boot or flower pin. After putting together an outfit, try adding an “-unexpected twist”- (such as thick belts or funky headpieces) to truly feel like Carrie.

    • 5

Understand that there is never a moment without fashion. To truly achieve Carrie’-s look, try to always appear presentable and play around with fashion and designers. Whether relaxing at home or cleaning her apartment, Carrie continually put effort into her appearance (even if it meant donning a necklace with pajamas.)

Tips &- Warnings

  • Start walking everywhere…-and preferably in heels. Stay slim like Carrie and build wonderful calve muscles by walking to your daily errands or lunches with friends (even if you don’-t live on the streets of New York.)

Bride bouquet ideas

Bride bouquet ideas

It's interesting:
"All the material you need to win laughs and touch hearts. Our interactive page will guide you step-by-step as you create an extraordinary speech that uniquely ..."

Bridal bouquets originated from the tradition of a bride carrying aromatics to ward off evil spirits on her wedding day. Bouquets now are a part of the overall style and theme of the wedding. They can incorporate the color scheme and represent the bride's personality, as well as provide a beautiful accent to her gown. There are a variety of options to make the bridal bouquet more interesting and personal.

  1. Great Impact

    • You can make a great impact with a simple arrangement by picking the right flowers. Hydrangeas, giant peonies and calla lilies all create a dramatic effect while being elegant and classic.

    Think Beyond Flowers

    • Try incorporating unique elements either instead of flowers or as a complement to them. Use natural elements such as greenery, fiddleheads, rose hips, oregano blossoms and thistle. Augment flowers with pearls, rhinestones or trailing beads.

    Seasonal

    • Use seasonal flowers such as daffodils or tulips in the spring, or amaryllis in the winter. In the summer go for a farmer's market mix of wildflowers and tie them together informally with a ribbon.

    Unique Arrangements

    • Think beyond a traditional arrangement to use fun and unusual shapes. Pomanders are usually carried by flower girls but can be used by bridesmaids or the bride. Have a bridal fan created out of flowers or have the flowers arranged in a bull's-eye pattern.

How to reserve a church for your wedding

reserve a church for your wedding

It's interesting:
"Paul is caring, he's generous, he's sensitive… in fact I don't even know him anymore. Linda has changed my best friend. Actually, I should thank you Linda. You've done in 18 months what I couldn't do in 18 years."

Many people, whether they attend church regularly or not, want to get married in a church. If you do attend a church, that's probably where you'll want to get married. If you don't, you may still have a church in mind for your wedding. Perhaps it's your childhood church, your parents' church, or a pretty chapel where you once attended a friend's wedding. In any of these cases, you have to talk to the church's staff and reserve the church to guarantee the building on your special day.

Things You'll Need

  • Phone

Instructions

  1. Before You Call

    • 1

Set a date and a backup date. Don't call the church with only a general idea when you want to be married. Pick the date and the time of day you want your wedding to be held. Pick a second date, as well, so that if the church is already reserved you can get the church on another date of your choice.

    • 2

Discuss who you want your officiant to be. If you have a relative who's a minister, you'll have to get permission from the church's pastor to have that person do the ceremony. If you want the church's minister to do your wedding for you, you will probably have to arrange to meet with him or her.

    • 3

Discuss with your fiance whether it's important to you to have traditional wedding vows or to write your own. Some churches will allow you to write your own vows and some won't, so you and your fiance should decide beforehand how you will handle either outcome.

    Making the Call

    • 4

Call the church when you have 15 minutes or so to talk to the pastor or whomever the church has designated to handle wedding arrangements. In small churches, it will be the pastor, but large churches often have a staff member who takes care of wedding planning

    • 5

Make sure that both the date and the time are available. Many churches, especially old or pretty ones, schedule multiple weddings in one day, so you have to be sure your time slot is free.

    • 6

If you want the pastor to perform the ceremony, ask for a face-to-face meeting, or be prepared to schedule one with both you and your fiance if the pastor brings it up. There may be a premarital counseling requirement (most churches have them) or other prerequisites.

    • 7

Ask what expenses, charges or fees there are for the use of the church. Some churches provide their buildings free to members, but some require a fee for the extra use of utilities and cleaning staff.

    After the Call

    • 8

Respect the fact that you are taking your vows in a house of worship. Follow the church's guidelines when it comes to music, flowers and photography, and ask your helpers to do the same.

    • 9

Include church staff in the invitations, especially to the reception. Even if you're only using their building, they do a lot behind the scenes to make your day special.

    • 10

Expect to have a religious ceremony in a church. Most couples are aware of this requirement, but a few are surprised that the officiant plans to say prayers or read scripture. Nonreligious ceremonies can be special and beautiful in nonreligious locations.

Tips &- Warnings

  • If another couple is getting married on the same day, contact them and see if they want to share expenses for decorations such as altar flowers and pew ribbons.

  • If you're not sure about the suitability of a church building, ask the staff for a tour before you reserve a date.

  • In a church wedding, the clergy are in charge. They are responsible for what happens in the building, and they have done this dozens of time. Follow their lead- don't expect them to follow yours. They will do their best to give you what you want.

Rustic weddings in georgia

Rustic weddings in georgia

It's interesting:
"Normally, an outdoor spring wedding is a risk. Will there be snow? Will it be cold? Will it be hot? Will it rain? Thankfully, today the risk paid off with no precipitation, perfect weather, and a beautiful backdrop to see the union of Paul and Linda."

Georgia offers many venues suitable for a rustic, outdoor or garden wedding. The happy couple can choose from locales such as a breathtaking flower garden, a rustic mountain lodge, a world-class seaside resort or an outdoor wedding beside a waterfall. The state is also home to many grand mansions that offer garden weddings on the estate grounds.

  1. Callaway Gardens

    • Callaway Gardens is a 13,000-acre resort in Pine Mountain, which is located 60 minutes southwest of Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson airport. The gardens' main claim to fame is its spectacular flower displays, especially the azaleas that bloom in the spring. The Callaway Brothers Azalea Bowl, a 40-acre garden boasting more than 3,400 hybrid azaleas, is one of the wedding sites available at Callaway Gardens. Alternative wedding sites include a Gothic-style chapel, a 5-acre garden/greenhouse horticultural center, and two large conference/discovery center complexes.

    Jekyll Island Hotel

    • The Jekyll Island Club Hotel is located on Jekyll Island, a barrier island on Georgia's southeastern coast. Formerly an exclusive turn-of-the-century playground for families such as the Vanderbilts and Rockefellers, the club is now a four-star resort and a national historic landmark. The resort offers beachside, riverside or chapel weddings and a trolley to transport wedding guests to and from the ceremony. The hotel offers carriage rides, lawn croquet, golf, tennis and a private beachfront.

    Chota Falls

    • Chota Falls is a 150-acre private estate located in Rabun County, in the north Georgia mountains. The property includes a chapel, a lake, waterfalls, vineyards, mountain overlooks, three guest houses and a ballroom that accomodates 300 people. Couples can hold their wedding on a mountain overlook, in front of a waterfall, or beside a lake. Rental cabins are also available at nearby properties, or in the town of Clayton.

    R-Ranch in the Mountains

    • R-Ranch in the Mountains is a resort located just north of Dahlonega in the north Georgia mountains. The resort offers a 13,000-square-foot lodge with panaromic views of the mountains in the Chattahoochee National Forest, a swimming pool, tennis courts, horseback riding and rustic cabins. Weddings can be conducted inside the lodge, outside on a mountain overlook, or in a small hillside chapel. The lodge can seat up to 200 guests.

Myths about determining a babys sex during pregnancy

Myths about determining a baby's sex during pregnancy

It's interesting:
"This wedding takes place during a week when the web is all astir over ... 4-Feb-201There's nothing like a wedding around Valentine's Day."

When something as magical as a pregnancy takes place, it is only expected that magical myths would surround the subject. The biggest question in a pregnancy is whether or not the baby is a boy or a girl. The only true way to determine a baby's sex is by ultrasound or amniocentesis tests. However, almost everyone has their own mythical way of determining the baby's sex, from the mother's appearance to her cravings or even the amount of weight her husband gains during her pregnancy.

  1. Bump Position

    • The most familiar of all pregnancy myths has to do with the positioning of the mother's bump on her belly. If the bump is low, you've got a boy. If the bump is high, you've got a girl. But science tells us that the position of the bump is attributed to uterine muscles and the position of the baby.

    Heartbeats

    • This myth that the fetal heartbeat differs between boys and girls was actually accepted by the medical community at one point. Apparently, girls will have a fetal heart rate above 140 and that of boys will be below 140. This myth gained credibility from the fact that girls' hearts do tend to beat faster during labor, but up until that point the heartrate has nothing to do with the baby's sex.

    The Husband's Weight Gain

    • Believe it or not, there is an old wives' tale that suggests that the father will actually gain weight during the pregnancy if the baby is a girl and will not gain a pound if the baby is a boy.

    The Mother's Face

    • Many myths have to do with the appearance of the mother's face. A full, round and rosy face indicates a baby girl. Increased acne also denotes a baby girl. Some myths say that if a mother's face grows unattractive during the pregnancy, then a little girl is stealing her looks. Little boys are said to perfectly complement a pregnant woman's beauty.

    The Cravings

    • That old poem of girls consisting of sugar, spice and everything nice may be the reasoning behind this myth. If a mother is craving something sweet, then she may be having a little girl. However, a mother who craves pickles and lemons and anything salty or bitter may be under the influence of a little boy.

    The Ring Trick

    • And then there's the good old-fashioned wedding-ring trick. This myth asks the mother to tie her wedding ring to a stick and dangle it above her belly. If the ring moves back and forth, there's a little girl in there. But if the ring moves around in circles, then a boy lies in wait.
