Being asked to officiate a wedding is a great honor. Sacramento County, California, is one of the easiest places to get a temporary license to officiate a wedding. In California, this is called a "One-Time Deputy Marriage Commissioner License," and it allows you to officiate a single, predesignated ceremony. The process to get this license is rather simple, but you must be at least 18 years old and a U.S. citizen to be approved.

      Print out the "One-Time Deputy Marriage Commissioner" application from the Sacramento County Internal Services Agency website. You can find this application form on the website, or you could go in person to the Sacramento County Clerk's Office.

Even if this is your first time performing a wedding ceremony, you can help create a perfect wedding day by planning ahead, educating yourself and consulting with the couple.

      Keep the focus on the bridal couple.

      Consult with the couple. Make sure that all legal requirements are met. The couple needs to obtain a marriage license and present you with the completed forms before the ceremony. Check that the license is valid and that both partners have identification. Talk with the couple and ascertain any personalized goals for the wedding ceremony. If the couple write their own vows, you might want to read the vows beforehand.

      Practice your role beforehand. You should finalize your speaking parts and have a hard copy available. You don't need to memorize your part of the ceremony but practice until you feel confident. Even if the ceremony is small, meet with the couple before the ceremony and practice the entire ceremony once or twice. This will ensure a smoother process on the actual day.

      Open the ceremony with an introduction. During the wedding ceremony, it's standard to open with the phrase: "Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to join this man and this woman in matrimony."       If the couple chooses not to use rings, merely skip to the next step.

      Guide the couple in exchanging vows and rings. You can use a standard script or personalized vows. The vows must reflect the legal commitment that the couple is making. Ask the bride and groom individually if they agree to the responsibilities and obligations of marriage. After each one answers "I do," the couple can recite more personal vows directly to each other. Ask the couple to place the wedding rings on each other's fingers.

      Pronounce the couple married. You might say: "By virtue of the authority vested in me under the laws of the state of Florida (or Maine or South Carolina), I now pronounce you husband and wife." Alter this according to the individual ceremony.

      File the marriage certificate. After the wedding, submit the certificate to the town clerk. Typically you have seven to 15 days. You should sign the certificate as the officiant and include all required information. The certificate should be signed in front of two witnesses. As a notary, you do not officially count as a witness.

      Record the marriage. As a notary, you are required to keep a record of all wedding ceremonies you perform. Include the date, names of the bride and groom and the location of the ceremony.

Is it a large gathering? Or will just a few friends be there? A formal reception invitation would be a good place to use phrases like "We invite you to celebrate the union of..." or "Your presence is requested," whereas a more informal event could do something like "Matt and Elizabeth want you to help celebrate their love." The latter sounds more personal and would also work well for smaller events.

Many people refer to "The Bridal Chorus" as the wedding march, but in fact, the "Wedding March" and "The Bridal Chorus" are two distinct pieces, each with their own histories and traditions. Both were originally written for use in the context of fictional weddings--one for a union that dissolved into immediate disaster and the other for a union that was a farce between a fairy and a man turned into a donkey. Both songs have also been banned for use in wedding ceremonies by some religions. Understanding the history and traditions behind each, may help you decide when--or whether--to use them in your own ceremony.

  1. History

    • Richard Wagner wrote "The Bridal Chorus," also known as "Here Comes the Bride." It became part of wedding tradition in the British Isles after it was used at the 1858 royal wedding of British Princess Victoria and Prussian Prince Frederick William. The "Wedding March," composed by Felix Mendelssohn, also finds its origins as a wedding song in the marriage of Victoria and Frederick when it was used as the recessional piece.

    Origins

    • "The Bridal Chorus" was composed as the opening piece for the third act of Wager's opera "Lohengrin." It is performed when Elsa and Lohengrin enter the bridal chamber to consummate their marriage. The wedding night turns tragic in the opera and it is said Wagner was amused that the piece was used in weddings. The "Wedding March" was composed as the "Overture" for Mendelssohn's incidental music for Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream." It was first performed in 1842.

    Tradition

    • In a traditional wedding, Wagner's "The Bridal Chorus" is played for the bride's processional. Mendelssohn's "The Wedding March" is played as the recessional from the church at the end of the ceremony. Because of bans in place by some religions on the use of "The Bridal Chorus," and sometimes because of the bridal couple's preference, "The Wedding March" is used for the bride's procession rather than "The Bridal Chorus," or different music entirely may be used.

    Bans

    • Some churches ban "The Bridal Chorus" for reasons including pagan themes in Wagner's opera. The Catholic Church has long had a ban on "The Bridal Chorus" as part of wedding ceremonies because it is classified as secular and only religious music may be used in a church ceremony. Though no actual bans exist, many Jewish weddings do not include "The Bridal Chorus" because of Wagner's anti-Semitic reputation. The Catholic Church and some other religions may also refuse the use of the "Wedding March" because of its connection to "A Midsummer Night's Dream" and the wedding of Fairy Queen Titania and Bottom.

    Lasso

    Jumping the Broom

    • Dating back to ancient African traditions, couples jump over a broom together. This act symbolizes the new life that they have formed together and that they both will face the same challenges and must conquer them together.

    Lei Ceremony

    • In this Hawaiian tradition, the bride and groom place a lei of flowers over each other to symbolize their love and respect. Leis may also be placed over other important members, such as the bridal party, children or parents.

    Colored Water

    • In this tradition, the mother of the bride and the mother of the groom pour a small vessel full of a different colored water. The bride and groom then take their respective colored vessels and pour them in a larger receptacle, symbolizing the union of a new family.

    • One of the most often quoted Christian Bible verses at a wedding is 1 Corinthians 13: 4-7. It reads the following: "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres." This is not a verse about weddings- it is about the qualities of love, but it often is read at weddings.

    Jewish Prayers

Many people go to the North Shore of Long Island, NY to taste wine. However there are three great wineries on the South Shore of Long Island that you can visit on a nice afternoon. These wineries offer exceptional tasting wine, stunning beauty and knowledgeable wine makers. However, they are smaller than most North Shore wineries. They are definitely worth the visit. All you need is a designated driver!

      Plan in advance, have a designated driver or hire a car service to take you from vineyard to vineyard. It is easy to not realize how much wine you drink on a flight of tastings.

      Start at Duckwalk Vineyards. This is the one furthest west. Located in Watermill, NY right near Southampton this winery has many great whites, reds, and desert wines.

      Next go to Channing Daughters Winery located in Watermill as well. This is the smallest of the three wineries on the South Shore but has some of the best tasting wines you will find. The winemaker is generally always around the tasting bar and is very knowledgeable in all aspects of wine. He will educate you on almost anything you can think of related to wine. Be sure when you go to Channing Daughters to check out the sculpture garden. The Owner of the winery is also an excellent carpenter and has many wooden sculptures spread throughout his property.

      Last it is important to drive over to Sagaponack and visit Wolffer Estate Vineyards. This is probably the best looking winery of the three and you can elegantly sip wine while watching the sunset and listening to music.

      Prepare for your next visit of Long Island wineries on the North Fork. There you will find exceptional vineyards such as Raphael and Pindar!
