Differences between traditional and modern presidencies

Differences between traditional and modern presidencies

It's interesting:
"Tom looks great on his wedding day doesn't he? I won't say it's funny to see ... Congratulations to Tom and Susan on their wedding. And since it's election week ..."

Modern presidencies come with complexities that traditional presidencies did not have. The first presidential office was composed of the president and his secretary- now, the president makes thousands of appointments when he enters office. Beginning with Andrew Jackson, who saw his election as the common man's victory, and carried on by successors like Franklin D. Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy, the idea of the president as "one of the people" made way for massive changes in modern-day presidencies.

  1. "Regular Joe" Factor

    • The State of the Union, along with countless other speeches made by modern day presidents, is a chance for the president to connect with Americans, explain his intentions and put concerns to rest. Modern day presidents like Richard Nixon and Bill Clinton speak as one of the people- they use their rhetorical skill to connect with the common man. This kind of speech was considered indulgent and was discouraged in traditional presidencies- in fact, presidents didn't even use their election as a cue to push through their personal policies until the early 20th century.

    Role of the President's Wife

    • Traditionally, the First Lady mostly handled hosting social functions and state events, like Martha Washington and Dolly Madison. Helen Taft and Lou Hoover upgraded their roles as President's wives by becoming advocates for immigrants and women. Eleanor Roosevelt was the real stand-out, serving as a social activist and public political partner to her husband. She even spoke on his behalf and served as a presidential ambassador. Bill Clinton used his wife's experience and intelligence as part of his campaign, telling his supporters they would be getting a two-for-one deal if they elected him. The role of the president's wife seems to escalate as time marches on, so much so that Hillary Clinton even ran for president herself.

    Television

    • It has been widely speculated that if television had been invented when Franklin D. Roosevelt was running for president, he would not have been elected because he was in a wheelchair. In more modern presidencies, the president is constantly giving speeches, waving at crowds, even playing with the dog on the White House lawn, all on television. Articles are written solely on modern president's speaking abilities, facial expressions and even choice of tie. When Richard Nixon and John F. Kennedy participated in the first televised presidential debate, Nixon was pale and sickly looking. He refused makeup, much to his detriment- the dapper and attractive Kennedy was much more appealing on screen. What presidents say --and how they look on television when they say it--can change a person's vote.

    Social Media and the Internet

    • Twitter and Facebook have changed the way presidents communicate, and also how their actions are delivered and perceived. Information is readily available online, whether through President Obama's tweets to the nation or a YouTube video of one of George W. Bush's speeches. Presidents must focus much more on damage control and public relations. Some presidential hopefuls have suffered serious damage through poor social media decisions, such as John Edwards' YouTube video making fun of his hair care or Hillary Clinton's take on "The Sopranos."

The history of the chinese tea drinking ceremony

The history of the chinese tea drinking ceremony

It's interesting:
"Today, I think we have all learned that there are few things more marvellous than an Autumn wedding, and nothing more beautiful than a Fall bride. It is wonderful occasions like this that provide us all with great memories that we will never, ever forget, and I am incredibly honoured to have been of part of this special day. Also, I want to thank you for getting married at this time of the year, because now, whenever I see the leaves turning colour and falling off the trees, I’ll be reminded that it’s time to buy your anniversary gift."

Tea drinking was so important in ancient China that the Chinese regarded it as one of the seven daily necessities. Today, the Chinese consume tea regularly and use it both as medicine and as a cooking agent. The Chinese tea ceremony seems less common in modern China, but tea is still a significant beverage.

  1. Tea Discovery Legend

    • Chinese legend holds that the Chinese emperor Yan Di consumed herbs in search of medicines and accidentally swallowed a poisonous herb. That emperor then consumed a drop of liquid from a tea tree and recovered from the poison. Tea later became associated with Chinese religion, especially among the monks that practiced Za-Zen meditation.

    Buddhism

    • In early China, tea was used as an herbal remedy in Buddhist monasteries. Chinese monks started to use tea as a way to show respect for nature, peace and calm. The monks believed that they could convey philosophical ideas through the tea ceremony. In 593, Japanese Buddhist monks traveling to China saw the Chinese tea ceremony and imported it to Japan, where it was adapted into Japanese culture.

    Tea Houses

    • Over time, tea began to be associated with enjoyment. Tea ceremonies became celebrations of emperors and family ancestors. Tea drinking became very significant during the Sung Dynasty between 960 and 1280, when beautiful tea houses appeared that served tea in carefully made teacups created from porcelain.

    Traditional Ceremony

    • During the Chinese tea ceremony, importance was placed on the person performing the ceremony. The performer had an attitude that reflected happiness and confidence. The tea used in the ceremony had a story behind it and a beautiful name. The tea was of high quality, with a good shape, taste and fragrance. The water was pure to not ruin the taste of the tea. The tea ceremony was performed in a clean, quiet and comfortable room with artwork that influenced the atmosphere.

The Chinese tea ceremony placed great importance on the actual tea. Those participating in the ceremony discussed the aspects of the tea, such as how it tasted. Though the ambiance and attitude of the Chinese tea ceremony was important, the performer was not required to make and serve the tea in a specific physical way.

    Elder Respect

    • Younger generations show respect for older generations by providing them with tea and paying for the elder's tea at restaurants. The Chinese once had subordinates pour tea, but modern China tends to avoid hierarchies. Older Chinese men perform an old men's tea ceremony, where the men drink tea while conversing. In Chinese weddings, the bride and groom serve the parents tea as a sign of respect.

Hotels with a dance floor in chicago

Hotels with a dance floor in chicago

It's interesting:
"On behalf of the bride and groom, I'd like to thank everyone for coming here today. Some of you have travelled considerable distances in order to be here and celebrate Paul and Linda’s happy day. Africa, Continental Europe, the Americas and Asia are not actually places where anyone has travelled from, but I hear that Uncle Jim and Auntie Morag had a 5 hour drive down from Glasgow."

Chicago is the nation's third largest city, home to more than two million residents. How to make zebra stripes on cupcakes using white icing

make zebra stripes on cupcakes using white icing

It's interesting:
"The best way to get a wedding reception crowd on side is too say something nice about the bride ... You could also add that it's been a wonderful wedding so far."

Thinking of new ideas for children's birthday parties can be difficult, but a jungle-themed party is rarely unappreciated. Very young children and young teenagers alike are fascinated by the exotic animals, so you can't go far wrong basing a party on this theme. Jungle animal cupcakes are a great addition to any jungle-themed party, and with a little food-coloring and some imagination, you can soon have an assortment of jungle favorites. An animal that can't go unrepresented at a jungle-themed party is the zebra, so make sure you include plenty of zebra cupcakes for the kids.

Add this to my Recipe Box.

Things You'll Need

  • Small bowl of chocolate frosting
  • Black food coloring
  • Sheet of white fondant icing
  • Rolling pin
  • Small sharp knife
  • Large flat metal spatula or wide knife
  • Deep mug of just boiled water

Instructions

    • 1

Mix a small bowl of chocolate frosting with black food coloring to make the base coat of the zebra print.

    • 2

Ice half a dozen or so of your cupcakes with the black frosting. Put it on as flat and even as you can. Some imperfections can be difficult to remove, and you can make the problem worse in your attempts to fix it. Rather than poke and scrape at the frosting on the cake, dip a large, flat metal spatula or wide knife in very hot water and run it across the surface of the frosting to smooth it out. Leave the cupcakes until the black frosting is dry and set.

    • 3

Roll out a thin piece of white fondant icing and cut out the white stripes to go on top of the black base.

    • 4

Place the white fondant icing on the cupcake. Zebra stripes are not regular, and while some will be roughly the same width all the way across the cake, others will narrow, taper and come to an end, while others will split into two and continue. A white line that has tapered and come to an end will fit in between the v-shape made where another white line has split into two. There will always be black in between the white lines.

    • 5

Run the very hot, wet spatula or knife quickly across the top of each cake to smooth the edges of the white icing down to the level of the black, giving the stripes a seamless look.

Tips &- Warnings

  • Other jungle animal cupcakes you can make are tigers, monkeys and lions. If you're feeling really creative, you could attempt to add faces and tails to some of them by sticking on candy pieces and piping on a tail or adding a cut-out fondant icing tail. A jungle fancy-dress code and face-painting session will help bring the whole jungle-themed party together.

Winter wedding cake ideas

Winter wedding cake ideas

It's interesting:
"Today, I think we have all learned that there are few things more marvellous than an Autumn wedding, and nothing more beautiful than a Fall bride. It is wonderful occasions like this that provide us all with great memories that we will never, ever forget, and I am incredibly honoured to have been of part of this special day. Also, I want to thank you for getting married at this time of the year, because now, whenever I see the leaves turning colour and falling off the trees, I’ll be reminded that it’s time to buy your anniversary gift."

Winter weddings can be especially beautiful because of the rich color palette of the seasonal colors, set as they are against the pristine whiteness of snow and ice in northern climates. If you're having a winter wedding, your wedding cake can carry the theme of the season into the reception.

  1. Snowman Cake Topper

    • Because a wedding cake is usually white already, use it to represent snow and decorate it with little pine trees made of paper. For a cake topper, instead of bride and groom statuettes, make a snowman and snow-bride out of marzipan.

    Snowflake Wedding Cake

    • Decorate your winter wedding cake with white marzipan snowflakes on the top and on the sides. The snowflake theme can be carried through to a fashionable cupcake wedding cake, as well, with all the cupcakes decorated with tiny snowflakes. Consider deviating from white frosting, so your snowflakes stand out against a colorful background of sky blue.

    Wintry Flavors

    • All that white frosting doesn't have to cover white cake. Consider a wedding cake that reflects the flavors that people think of at winter time: rich chocolate, tangy cranberry or even peppermint. If you're a fruitcake fan, you can carry that concept through to your wedding cake.

    Winter Flower Cake Toppers

    • Instead of a bride and groom statuette, decorate your cake with winter flowers such as poinsettias or Christmas roses. If you want edible icing flowers, have your baker create flowers that match the winter flowers in your bouquet.

Pine Trees in the Snow Wedding Cake

    • Decorate your white wedding cake with tiny pine cones and foliage made out of icing. Sprinkle the whole cake with coconut to give the impression of freshly fallen snow.

    Wintry Colors

    • Carry out the theme of ice and snow by frosting your wedding cake in a palette of cool blues and silvers as well as white. Another idea is to stick with the white cake, but to use Christmas colors to decorate, making red and green holly from icing and red berries.

    Snow Globe Wedding Cake

    • Top your winter wedding cake with a beautiful snow globe---maybe even a snow globe with a bride and groom inside.

    Santa Claus Wedding Cake

    • If you're having a Christmas wedding, carry out the theme in the cake's presentation. Build a stable but beautiful version of Santa's sleigh, and set the cake in the sleigh, which can be pulled by lovely reindeer statues. You can even add a little statue of Santa driving the sleigh to delight any children who are guests at the wedding.

    Penguin Wedding Cake

    • Have fun with your wedding cake by decorating it with little penguins. You can carry this idea out with an all white cake decorated with coconut flakes to represent snow, or with an icy palette of blues and silvers to represent ice.

Decorative centerpiece ideas for wedding receptions

Decorative centerpiece ideas for wedding receptions

It's interesting:
"Sorry if the speeches drag on. Wedding receptions can be a bit like an X Factor results show. You just want to skip through the talky bits to find out ..."

Wedding reception centerpieces vary from the very elaborate to the very simple, whether handcrafted or professionally made. Many websites and books offer creative ideas for centerpieces. Once you decide on what arrangements would best suit the theme and mood of your reception, explore your options. In addition to the traditional centerpiece ideas of candles, flowers and ornaments, there are many new and alternative ideas from which to choose.

  1. Candle Treatments

    • Candles create a warm and romantic atmosphere. A cluster of white or silver votive candles could be set in a cut glass bowl of water or wine glasses. Or a white pillar candle could be set into a square glass vase of coffee beans, white sand, pebbles or seashells, then placed on a bed of flat greens with a few small flowers added. Taper and pillar candles also add more light to an evening reception. (See References 1)

    Section 2: Paper Flowers

    • Centerpieces using paper flowers is a growing trend. This may be because paper flowers can create unique centerpieces. Made of many different papers, the flowers can be in many combinations of colors, but should support the theme or color choices of the bride. Well-made paper flowers look like real flowers, but unlike real flowers, they provide the bride and guests with a gift or memento that lasts for months or years. (See References 1)

    Fruit Centerpieces

    • Fruit is colorful and fragant, and can be used creatively.

Fresh fruit can be a fun and colorful centerpiece choice. Citrus fruits add bright color and also provide a fresh fragrance. Fruit presents a far less expensive option than fresh flowers. Whole lemons or tangerines or sliced lemons can look striking when set into water in a tall glass vase, with one tall flower set into the center where the fruit serves as a support. (See References 1)

    Seasonal Centerpieces

    • Seasonal centerpieces can be as festive as the holiday they represent, whether for Easter, Christmas, Hanukkah, Halloween or any other fun holiday. Christmas centerpieces can be constructed with minimal fuss and expense. A number of colorful ornaments placed on a green bed of evergreens, or candles placed among evergreens and red berries, is one colorful choice. For an autumn wedding, a carved out pumpkin can serve as a vase for a bouquet of short-stemmed flowers. (See References 2)

    Inventive Arrangements

    • Candle arrangements can make striking centerpieces.

Centerpieces can be as inventive as you are. Set a love poem or lyric--your own or a famous one--among a bed of greens and white taper candles. Or feature on the same setting photos of you and your fiancé-, now and in childhood. Natural materials such as twigs, branches, seashells, pebbles or pine cones can be left in their natural state or spray-painted white or silver for a unique arrangement at each table. (See References 3)

What is appropriate to wear to a blacktieoptional wedding

What is appropriate to wear to a black-tie-optional wedding?

It's interesting:
"On behalf of the bride and groom, I'd like to thank everyone for coming here today. Some of you have travelled considerable distances in order to be here and celebrate Paul and Linda’s happy day. Africa, Continental Europe, the Americas and Asia are not actually places where anyone has travelled from, but I hear that Uncle Jim and Auntie Morag had a 5 hour drive down from Glasgow."

As weddings become more personal and couples seek ways to make their special day unique to them, wedding dress codes have also become more complicated. Understanding the subtle differences between dress styles, and what you should wear when, can save you the embarrassment of arriving underdressed to a formal event. For example, one commonly misunderstood wedding dress code is black-tie optional.

Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Definition

    • A black-tie optional wedding is a formal event, usually held in the late afternoon or evening. Unlike traditional black or white-tie affairs, the rules for black-tie optional are slightly more relaxed. Essentially, black-tie optional represents the middle ground between the extreme formality of a black tie event and the semiformal attire most commonly associated with weddings. Consider a black-tie optional event a chance to wear either a long satin gown or a sassy vintage beaded cocktail dress. The key is to think dressed up, glamorous and formal.

    Women's Attire

    • According to Emily Post, women attending a black-tie optional event should wear a formal, floor-length gown, a dressy cocktail dress or dressy separates. In general, dresses are most appropriate, but pants or skirts made from more dressy fabrics, such as silk, satin or velvet, can work. Look for separates that feature beading, intricate embroidery or even a little bit of sparkle. For example, a pair of wide-legged velvet trousers paired with a sparkly tank and an embellished cashmere shrug or cardigan is appropriate for this type of event.

    Accessories and Styling

    • A black-tie optional event is a glamorous affair, so take the time to style yourself more dramatically than you would for everyday. When you’-re headed to a black-tie optional event, leave your oversized work purse at home. Instead, carry a small clutch —- look for something with a little sparkle to add glamour to your outfit. Dramatic, bold accessories are also appropriate. Save the simple studs for work, and wear a pair of large drop earrings, or choose a large cocktail ring or statement necklace or bracelet. Hair styled into a formal up-do would not be out of place, either.

    Men's Attire

    • Men attending a black-tie optional wedding have the choice to wear either a formal tuxedo or a dark suit with a dress shirt, tie, and black shoes and socks. If you choose to go the tux route, choose tuxedo pants without the satin stripe or braid, as that style is associated with the more formal white-tie style. Wear a black bow tie, a black cummerbund or vest, and dark-colored cuff links and studs. Avoid wearing colored bow ties and cummerbunds, such as those that match your companion’-s dress- these are generally reserved for creative black tie events or the wedding party. Shine your dress shoes, and wear black dress socks.

Elegant prom hairstyle ideas

Elegant prom hairstyle ideas

It's interesting:
"Now everyone, I'm aware that it's a particularly cold winter's day for a wedding, but don't worry... if anyone is feeling a chill running down their spine it's ..."

While a lot of attention typically gets paid to picking out the perfect prom dress, your hairstyle is also very important. The way you style your hair for prom will be immortalized in your photos and memories from that night. Your hairstyle can add spice to a plain prom dress or balance out an off-the-wall dress choice. An elegant hairstyle will enhance your prom night if you gravitate toward such styles in your everyday life or if you want a hairstyle to match a dress inspired by the elegant Hollywood stars of yesteryear.

Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Chignon

    • A chignon can be enhanced with accessories.

Style your hair in a classic chignon --- a twist somewhat similar to a bun but with more shape and complexity --- for a prom hairstyle that will evoke style icons like Carolyn Bessette Kennedy. Chignons may be worn high, near the crown of the head, or low, near the nape of the neck. Subtle accessories like a pearl-encrusted comb or bobby pins with mother-of-pearl hearts on the ends can add a bit of pizazz to a chignon without detracting from the elegance of the style. Chignons are not typical prom hairstyles, so wearing one will give you an original look.

    Bun

    • Buns can be almost sculptural in appearance.

Twist your hair into a bun for a style traditionally associated with ballerinas, some of the most elegant dancers in the world. Secure your hair back but don't make it too tight, otherwise you may give yourself the "non-surgical face lift" look. Buns can be worn high on the head or low, near the nape of the neck, loose and smooth or tight like a ballerina's hair.

    French Braid

    • French braids can also be styled across the top of the head.

Style your hair in a French braid, a complex, multi-stranded braid that typically requires some assistance to execute, for a timelessly elegant style that will complement any prom dress. French braids can comprise a single, thick braid running down the back of the head, twin braids on either side of the head, a loosely woven braid crossing the top of the head, or twin braids going down the sides of the head and meeting in a bun at the nape of the neck.

    Flowing Waves

    • Wavy hair matches almost any style dress.

Choose a hairstyle of loose, flowing waves with softly curled ends for a classic, elegant yet natural style that will contrast flatteringly with the over-elaborate updo hairstyles common at proms. Flowing waves match almost any style of prom dress, but look the most elegant when paired with a simple, classic dress (such as a sheath dress) and a few understated but luxurious accessories like a single crocodile-skin bangle bracelet.

The difference between covenants vows

The difference between covenants & vows

It's interesting:
"Now, I appreciate that you're all missing the Wimbledon final to be here today, but let this wedding be a reminder that there's more to life than single events ..."

The difference between covenants and vows is largely a linguistic matter in the modern world, with both meaning almost the same thing. Due to this, the word "covenant" has largely slipped out of usage, but there is a subtle difference between the two. If you use the Bible as a reference point for these two words, the difference between them very quickly becomes more important.

  1. Covenant

    • A covenant is an agreement between two parties to do or not do something. A modern example would be a wedding, where both parties agree to honor and obey each other. Often these words are referred to as "wedding vows," but this is not technically correct. Another famous example is the covenant between God and the ancient Israelites, as mentioned in the Bible. Under this agreement God promised to protect them as long as they followed his law and worshipped no other.

    Vow

    • A vow is a promise made by an individual that he or she will do something or not do something. This differs from a covenant in that a vow could be made to oneself or to another, without being reciprocated or shared.

    Swearing

    • In a Christian marriage, some Christians believe the couple form a covenant thanks partly to Matthew 5:33-37. In this passage, Jesus says never to make vows but only to respect the terms of a covenant. This is because to swear by God is to belittle God's throne and to swear by anything on Earth is to belittle his footstool. Yet swearing oaths occurs regularly throughout the Bible, and others would argue that what this passage actually prohibits is swearing an oath that you do not intend to keep. As with much Bible study, their are diverse opinions on meaning, but yet again this is subtly different from a covenant or vow.

    Contract

    • While the covenant may sound like a contract, there is again a subtle difference. A covenant is a joyous thing because it is two parties coming together in an agreement that they will behave a certain way, because they want to. A contract by its very nature suggests distrust, and is intended to punish one party should he break the contract.

"I want to welcome each of you to the wedding today. It is a true testament to the bride and groom that you have taken time from your busy schedule to come and witness their marriage. I have never seen a more beautiful bride than Linda, and Paul looks just plain proud, doesn’t he?"

Northern Michigan is a popular destination for recreational getaways, as it is home to many lakes and expanses of forest. According to the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and Environment, in addition to the Great Lakes, Michigan also claims 11,037 inland lakes. Many of these lakes and their surrounding wooded areas occupy the tip of the Mitten State, providing a scenic backdrop for a day trip, weekend away or longer vacation.

  1. Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore

    • At 400 feet tall, the Sleeping Bear Dunes are a group of hills made of gold and red sand, located on Leelanau Peninsula, a beach area that juts out into Lake Michigan. Shaped by glaciers long ago, the dunes make a relaxing setting for group adventures and low-key vacations. Vacationers come to the Sleeping Bear Dunes to swim, camp or hike for a weekend or to spend an afternoon enjoying the scenery. The Sleeping Bear Dunes Visitor's Bureau suggests climbing the dunes and picnicking, as well as driving along the free Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive.

The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore community offers both rustic and modernized campgrounds. Additionally, the nearby Stony Brook Lodge offers suites with a view of the dunes, and The Homestead is a local year-round resort on the shore of Lake Michigan. According to the Sleeping Bear Dunes Visitors Bureau, there are more than 60 restaurant options available in the area, from casual quick eats to fine dining.

    Mackinac Island

    • Mackinac Island is located on the northeastern tip of the Michigan "mitten." A destination popular for both romantic getaways and family vacations, this island of 4 square miles is home to many old-fashioned favorites. For example, Murdick's Fudge--one of the most popular local shops--has been operating on the island since 1887.

The world-famous Grand Hotel, built in 1887, attracts international guests based on reputation alone. Although many visitors come to the hotel for weddings or conventions, others just want to enjoy a romantic getaway while being pampered in one of the 385 diverse guest rooms. Five-course meals are served in the hotel's main dining room, where dinner jackets and proper attire are required. For vacationers looking to relax without all the fuss, there are plenty of other accommodations on the island. Harbor Place Studio Suites offers convenience for individuals and families, as the suites provide kitchen and laundry amenities.

    Petoskey

    • Petoskey, Michigan, located along Lake Michigan on the northern tip of the state, was mentioned in the book "The 100 Best Small Towns in America," as noted on the city's official website. At just over 5 square miles, Petoskey is known for its home-away-from-home charm. This small city's downtown area has a casual feel. A local favorite is PapaLou's Pizza Pub & Grill, with its Italian-influenced lunch and dinner menus and its live entertainment, poker nights and theme parties. Roast and Toast is a cozy coffeehouse and cafe that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The Pleasantview Winery holds wine tastings, offering Michigan-made wines to try and buy. The Odawa Casino and Resort gives vacationers the chance to gamble, stay in luxury accommodations and dine at the 24-hour Copper Cafe, Waas-No-Dé- Buffet or Sage--the casino's fine-dining option. The Bay View Terrace Inn is a historic 37-bedroom bed and breakfast that caters to large groups as well as couples. The inn also operates a restaurant and offers vacation packages combined with local attractions and activities .

How to make a tower floral

make a tower floral

It's interesting:
"'It was two days before the wedding and I finally sat down to write my toast. Low and ... Everyone at the wedding said it was the best toast they had ever heard.' ..."

Make a dramatic statement at your next party or wedding by creating an Eiffel tower floral arrangement. This type of floral arrangement is a centerpiece that uses a thin, tapered glass vase. To match your color scheme, you can use flowers that you love or add some food coloring to the water in the vase. To give your event space some more dimension, vary the centerpieces with tall or short tower vases.

Things You'll Need

  • Vases
  • Flowers
  • Knife
  • Bucket
  • Floral foam
  • Straight handled floral foam bouquet holder
  • Plastic centerpiece bowl with post
  • Green florist tape
  • Greenery
  • Feathers

Instructions

    • 1

Choose the height of the vase you wish to use for your floral arrangement. Eiffel vases come in a variety of sizes. Choose 24-inches for a tall centerpiece that allows your guests to talk across the table and 16-inch vases for buffet tables, for example.

    • 2

Hydrate the flowers for your arrangement. Cut an inch off the end of each stem at an angle. Soak the flowers in in water overnight.

    • 3

Soak floral foam in water for 10 minutes. If you want to use a bouquet holder with foam, first soak in water before attaching it to the Eiffel tower vase.

    • 4

Cut greenery to 6 to 8-inches. Insert the floral greenery into the outer edge of the floral foam. Lower the longer pieces of greenery further down into the floral foam to hide the bouquet holder.

    • 5

Add flowers to the Eiffel tower vase. Follow the design of the greenery. Trim the flowers and greenery as needed to make the flowers appear they extend out above the vase. Add larger flowers first, such as spider mums or lilies. Spread them out around the arrangement evenly. Add medium size flowers next, like calla lilies and roses. Fill in empty areas with daisies, carnations, solidago and baby's breath.

    • 6

Add a couple of tall feathers to the Eiffel tower vase to disguise the floral foam and the stems of the flowers.

Tips &- Warnings

  • Try different types of greenery for various looks. Create your floral arrangements the day of the event to ensure the flowers hold up and appear fresh.

How to plan a lastminute wedding

plan a last-minute wedding

It's interesting:
"Just as the happy couple wanted, this is a lovely, small, intimate gathering of close friends and family – so could someone please tell me why I'm here."

A wedding marks the first day of the rest of your life. Planning a last minute wedding can be one of the most exciting and enjoyable times in your life. However, there are various things that cannot be forgotten, such as getting a marriage license, sending thank you cards after the wedding and going over the final details of the wedding to make sure everything is in place.

Things You'll Need

  • Budget
  • Priest
  • Location
  • Invitations
  • Dress and Tux
  • Wedding Accessories

Instructions

    • 1

Come up with a budget for your last minute wedding. Decide how big or how small your wedding will be. Decide how much money is a reasonable amount to spend on a last minute wedding.

    • 2

Decide on a location for your wedding. Several locations include a church, on the beach or in a local hall in your neighborhood. Your location should be big enough for the guests you plan to invite. Since most places are booked months in advance, it may be tough to book a place that's in high demand.

    • 3

Locate a priest or rabbi. If you attend church regularly, you can ask your own priest or pastor. Find out how much it will cost. Some priests and pastors don't charge, and some do. If you can afford it, then hiring one is an option.

    • 4

Decide how many people will come to the wedding. Send out the invitations as soon as possible since the wedding will be soon. Don't wait until the last minute or else your guests may not be able to make it or may have scheduled other plans.

    • 5

Find a wedding dress and tux for your groom-to-be. Look for dresses and tuxes for your bridesmaids, maid of honor and groomsmen. Start shopping as early as possible. Your fiancé- may want to use a suit he already has, if need be.

    • 6

Order your wedding accessories such as cake, flowers, decorations and entertainment for the reception. The wedding cake of your dreams may have to be ordered in advance, so you may have to go with a sheet cake or a ready-made cake. Decide what kind of flowers you'd like to have in your hand as the bouquet and what kinds of flowers you want as decorations. Purchase the decorations you want to have at the location and where you want to put them. Hire the entertainment as soon as possible as well, because the entertainment is usually booked months in advance.

How do i get certified to marry in pennsylvania

How do i get certified to marry in pennsylvania?

It's interesting:
"Today we have all gathered together to celebrate Paul’s success. We lads are greatly fond of Paul, and now that he is departing from our bachelor midst we must try to comfort ourselves with the thought that we are not losing a friend, but gaining a Linda. Looking at it like that, what a bargain we’ve got."

Getting engaged and planning a wedding can be an exciting time---you and your significant other get to plan every detail, from the cake to the disc jockey. Still, amidst the excitement of the ceremony and reception, it is important to remember that marriage is also a legal institution. Just as you would apply for a license to drive or hunt, you must apply for a marriage license. Though the process varies from state to state, and sometimes from county to county, applying for a marriage license in Pennsylvania is a simple and relatively painless process.

Things You'll Need

  • Photo ID
  • Decree of divorce (if applicable)
  • Death certificate for former spouse (if applicable)

Instructions

    • 1

Visit your county's administrative offices with your significant other. Though it varies slightly, marriage license applications are typically processed by the orphan's court division and/or registry of wills.

    • 2

Fill out a marriage application---this, along with every other step, must be completed by both you and your significant other. You may also have to pay a processing fee and show photo identification.

    • 3

Prove that you are currently single. If you have been married in the past, you must present either a decree of divorce or your former spouse's death certificate.

    • 4

Wait three days, the mandatory waiting period in Pennsylvania. In some counties, this can be waived by a judge for an additional cost, but don't count on it---plan ahead.

    • 5

Get married within 60 days. If you wait too long, the license expires, so don't apply for your license too early, either.

Tips &- Warnings

  • The state of Pennsylvania does not allow first cousins to marry.

Definition of party favors

Definition of party favors

It's interesting:
"There's something special about a church wedding, but most of us here have to admit that we rarely set foot inside a church these days. In fact ..."

Party favors are small gifts that guests receive when they go to a party. Birthday parties, wedding showers, baby showers and Halloween parties are examples of occasions that usually include party favors. There are various types of gifts that can be considered party favors.

  1. Children's Parties

    • Most children's parties have party favors. Some birthday parties have pinatas packed full of candy, treats and favors such as small toys, stickers, noisemakers, blowouts and trinkets. Schools that throw parties for their students often send them home with a small bag of favors such as erasers, pencils, stickers, rulers or other supplies.

    Adult Parties

    • Adult gatherings such as bachelor parties, wedding showers and anniversary dinners often include party favors. These can be coupons, gag gifts, trinkets, key chains or other small items. People of all ages often enjoy party favors. Many adults save party favors to preserve a memory of the party.

    Traditions

    • Many cultures around the world have party favor traditions. For example, in Puerto Rico it is a tradition to place a doll that resembles the bride on a table at a bridal shower. The doll is covered in small charms that are given to the guests. In Malaysia, guests at bridal showers are given a decorated egg. In the Middle East, it is popular to give wedding shower guests a bag of candy.

    Ideas

    • Consider having favors at your next party. Give guests candy or food in a small bag or tin. Distribute key chains, small toys, balloons, beauty products, party hats, picture frames, pens, pencils, candles, thank-you cards, coupons or photos. Give guests mistletoe at Christmas parties or fake eyeballs on Halloween.

    Function

    • There are two primary reasons that party favors are given out during parties. Many people are sentimental and like to have a keepsake to remind them of the special time they just experienced. Hosts also like to make parties and gatherings more enjoyable by handing out party favors or playing games to win larger prizes.

How to plant a tree instead of unity candles for outdoor weddings

plant a tree instead of unity candles for outdoor weddings

It's interesting:
"Click on a category below. Links to your chosen speeches will appear in the viewer on the right. Speech 6 in the category 'Childhood friend' under the heading ..."

Unity candles symbolize the couple and their families uniting. Though it's a meaningful ceremony, it's not always ideal for an outdoor wedding due to the wind blowing the candles out. Plant a tree together instead of a unity candle ceremony as an alternative if you want an eco-friendly wedding or want something you can nurture along with your marriage. After the wedding, plant the tree somewhere meaningful to you, such as your first home together, a park where you plan to picnic and eventually take your children or your parent's home for safe-keeping.

Things You'll Need

  • Decorated pot
  • Tree or sapling
  • Decorated garden shovel
  • Wet towelettes or handkerchiefs
  • 2 Watering cans

Instructions

    • 1

Decorate a pot large enough to hold your tree or sapling. Use your wedding colors and theme as inspiration, or keep it simple by painting your initials and wedding date on the pot and tying a ribbon around it. Decorate one or two garden shovels the same way.

    • 2

Plant the tree or sapling in the pot prior to the wedding unless your wedding ceremony is at the location you want the tree planted at. Pre-planting it will also keep you from getting filthy in your wedding dress.

    • 3

Ask your officiant, parents or another important person to read a poem, story or scripture that pertains to trees and how they relate to marriage. For example, tell the story of the "USS Constitution" being made from oak and donning the nickname "Old Ironsides" due to her resiliency. Marriage must be resilient and strong to withstand the tides of time and trials of daily life, much like a battle ship.

Alternatively, focus on the nourishment, sun, water and love the tree must receive, much like marriage needs nourishment, nurturing, love and commitment.

    • 4

Use the decorated garden shovels to add soil to the potted tree. Alternatively, pick up a handful of dirt and place it in the pot. Involve your parents, children or guests by allowing everyone to add soil if you want to include everyone. Use soil from significant places, such as your childhood homes, the park where he proposed or where you met if you want the tree to have more meaning. Have wet towelettes or handkerchiefs to wipe your hands.

    • 5

Water the tree together with watering cans already full and placed nearby to show that you will work together to nurture your marriage.

What instruments were used in motown music

What instruments were used in motown music?

It's interesting:
"Just as the happy couple wanted, this is a lovely, small, intimate gathering of close friends and family – so could someone please tell me why I’m here. Oh, that’s right, to make a speech, so here goes …"

Say the words "Motown Records," and what might come to mind are the individual vocalists and groups that allowed Gordy Berry's recording label to become popular. Not until 2002 were the instrumentalists behind the Motown sound known beyond the confines of Studio A. These talented musicians were nicknamed The Funk Brothers. Without that studio band, the Motown sound may not have existed.

  1. Basic Instruments

    • The instrumental foundation for Motown music was made by combinations of percussion instruments, bass guitar, guitar, tambourine and piano.

    Original Funk Brothers

    • Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee James Jamerson played the bass guitar, inductee Benny Benjamin did the percussion and Earl Van Dyke played the piano on the first Motown songs of 1959 and on. Jack Ashford played the tambourine.

    Additional Instruments

    • Some Motown songs utilized the marimba and vibraphone. The horn used most was a saxophone and, rarely, a flute, trombone or trumpet was used. Use of a string section was even less common.

    Innovative Guitar

    • Motown's guitar sound was changed in 1967 by guitarists Melvin "Wah-Wah Watson" Ragin and Dennis Coffey when they used the wah-wah pedal for soul songs.

    Innovative Percussion

    • A tire iron in "Dancing in the Streets," snow chains in "Nowhere to Run," and hand clapping and the tambourine on many songs were part of the Motown percussion sound. Sometimes two or three drummers would play at once in unison.

    Echo Chamber

    • A hole was made in the studio ceiling to act as an echo chamber to create a reverb sound on recordings such as "Dancing in the Streets" and "Please Mr. Postman."

Unity candles etiquette

Unity candles etiquette

It's interesting:
"Congratulatory remarks about the wedding ... Wasn't the wedding ceremony beautiful? That row of handsome men and a parade of gorgeous attendants. And ..."

Unity candles are a newer wedding tradition, but one with many interesting variations. Full of religious meaning, a sense of community or simply a symbol of the ultimate meaning of marriage, unity candles are a great addition to any wedding.

  1. History

    • The unity candle ceremony isn't traceable to any of the world's other wedding traditions. But the custom is most like "the candlelight blessing," where the candle's flame is a symbol of Christ ("the light of the world").

    Significance

    • When the bride and groom use two small candles to light one bigger candle together, it symbolizes two becoming one. If the couple lights the center candle together and the mothers each light a candle on either side of the large flame, the unity candle symbolizes the coming together of two families.

    Etiquette

    • If the mothers (or other significant relatives) are involved, care should be taken that both women are allowed to light their candles at the same time. If stepparents are present, it is best to offer them candles, too.

    Safety

    • Use hurricane covers on candles that will be left sitting for any length of time. Be sure to keep tents, tablecloths or anything else that might blow into a candle flame well away from the candles.

    Fun Fact

    • Many brides and grooms keep their unity candles and relight them together on their anniversaries.

Fall bridal bouquet ideas

Fall bridal bouquet ideas

It's interesting:
"On behalf of the bride and groom, I'd like to thank everyone for coming here today. Some of you have travelled considerable distances in order to be here and celebrate Paul and Linda’s happy day. Africa, Continental Europe, the Americas and Asia are not actually places where anyone has travelled from, but I hear that Uncle Jim and Auntie Morag had a 5 hour drive down from Glasgow."

Brides planning fall weddings often design their themes around the season's rich color palette, which includes deep russets, golden oranges and vibrant yellows. Fall flowers provide brides with the opportunity to incorporate some of these colors into their floral decor, beginning with the bridal bouquet. Seasonal flowers and unexpected touches make for inspired fall bridal bouquets.

  1. Dahlias

    • In season from August through October in most parts of the U.S., dahlias are an ideal flower for brides who want bouquets with lots of color and textures. The flower comes in a myriad of forms, from the small, rounded pompon blooms to the layers of gently pointed petals on formal decorative varieties. You can fill in a bouquet of dahlias with greenery and petite filler flowers, but the blooms are also striking when gathered into a simple hand-tied bouquet. Choose dark purple or chocolate colored dahlias for late fall weddings and add a sumptuous touch with flocked velvet leaves. Offset dahlias' smooth petals with stems of frilly and fuzzy celosia, a fall flower that comes in shades of green, pink and burgundy.

    Ribbon and Fabric Flowers

    • You may not have as many seasonal flower options as the fall season unfolds, but that doesn't mean you can't still have a bouquet of candy-colored blooms. If you can't get exactly the flowers you want from the florist, make your own fabric flowers. Use ribbons, fabric, wool felt and rickrack to create a whimsical bouquet that will never fade. Making the flowers takes little time- cutting a circle from wool felt with a pair of pinking shears, gathering the center and sewing a pearl button to hold the gather in place is all you need to do to create a simple poppy. To create a bloom from rickrack, you only need to sew tiny stitches into the rickrack's bottom points and pull the thread tight to gather the material into an accordion. Glue the two ends of the accordion together to create a circle, insert a few artificial flower stamens into the center and glue them in place.

    Roses

    • Perennially popular roses are in season year-round, which means even fall brides can carry bouquets where this classic wedding flower takes center stage. While roses are well suited for traditional bridal bouquets, they also look stunning when arranged in a bouquet that exudes modern sensibilities. If you want an understated bouquet to match with a simple wedding dress, opt for a tightly-packed bunch of hand-tied roses. Combine seasonal roses in spicy orange and light peach with autumn leaves and ornamental berries for a harvest-inspired bouquet. Add velvet-textured sage leaves to a fall bouquet of roses to offset the flowers' smooth, tightly clustered petals.

How to write the perfect wedding speech

write the perfect wedding speech

It's interesting:
"Linda is beautiful. She’s intelligent. She’s funny. She can cook like Nigella Lawson and she’s got the patience of a saint. Paul, I can say with my hand on my heart that you’re one of the luckiest men alive. And she writes a cracking Best Man speech as well."

Weddings are an occasion that people remember their entire lives. They will look back on that day again and again. Speeches in honor of the happy couple will be recorded and talked about for years. Writing a good speech, nay, writing a perfect speech is essential.

Things You'll Need

  • Paper
  • Pen
  • Quiet place
  • Mirror

Instructions

    • 1

First of all, get in the mood to write the speech. Watch a few wedding movies like Father of the Bride, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Wedding Singer, or Wedding Crashers. The serious parts of the movies will show you what the speech should flow like and the proper tone it should take.

    • 2

If you have them, watching a few home movies of your family's weddings can give you some good ideas as well. See what you thought of any speeches given and where they did a good job and sounded nice and where they were not so great. You may even want to take notes so you can write down how long the into Cousin Julie's speech Uncle Frank fell asleep or how what phrases you thought really sounded nice. These will give you some ideas to work with.

    • 3

In a nice, calming and quiet spot, sit down with paper and a pen. Start by brainstorming unique things about the people getting married. Try to write down what is great about them and why they are special. Quirks are great too. How the couple met can be good if it was in a cute way.

    • 4

Look over the things you've written down. Circle the things you think would be good to mention in your speech. You'll want a few things. Something to mention as a basis for a joke, something to mention as story, and something to show how sweet and nice the bride and groom are.

    • 5

Starting any speech with a small joke opens people up and puts your audience in a good mood. It is also a common way to start a speech and although people may deny it, tradition is reassuring especially on a wedding day. If people expect something they feel more comfortable and relaxed when it appears on time.

    • 6

Your joke should be in good taste and not offend anyone in your audience. Sex, religion, politics, and all those kinds of things are pretty much taboo. Her love of shopping, his lack of housecleaning skills, their lack of cooking skills, these are usually okay things to make into a joke. Make sure it is not a sore subject though. If they've argued over the quirk or behavior, it is not something you want to mention.

    • 7

The story you tell should also avoid taboo subjects. Its length should vary based on how long you want your speech to be. If it is to be a really short speech, you may not even want to add a story. A story of how the groom was there for you in your time of need or how the bride dragged you all over the place for just the right dress, these kinds of things work well. The story should be heartfelt.

    • 8

End your speech by making another small joke and saying how happy you are that the couple will be together forever. No matter how you actually feel about the couple's chances for staying together, act happy and glad for them.

    • 9

Now you have the basis for your speech. Read it aloud and add or remove words as needed. You will also want to add transitions when moving from one subject to another. Make your speech sound nice and flowing.

    • 10

Say your speech in front of a mirror many times until you have it memorized. Also practice your facial movements so that your face matches what you are saying. You don't want to look sad at the happy parts or happy at the sad parts.

    • 11

Write up your speech nice and neatly on a piece of paper, spacing it widely and using a large size print so if you do need to look at it, it will be easy to see.

Tips &- Warnings

  • Don't drink too much before giving your speech, you can drink all you want afterwards, but you'll only make a fool out of yourself if you're drunk when it's time to speak.

  • Don't worry too much when it comes time to do your speech, it doesn't really matter too much what you say. The bride and groom are going to be so happy that everything is going to sound wonderful to them, and they're the ones that really matter.

"But fortunately Giles recovered from his stag do and made it to the wedding today … + Add to clipboard. 11-Feb-201It's been a great week for the groom."

A tropical fruit that probably emerged in south-central Mexico before 5,000 B.C., the avocado was domesticated much later —- and quite widely. Taking this ancient tree into the backyard, however, is challenging given its large size. Sometimes still known as alligator pears, those dark, bumpy, pear-shaped avocados frequently seen at the market are Hass avocados, now the most popular variety in the world. Track down a dwarf Hass avocado tree for patio planting and enjoy growing your own.

Instructions

    • 1

Ask local nurseries if they know of any true dwarf Hass avocado trees. New hybrid varieties are always being discovered or developed, but as of 2010 only one small avocado tree produced fruits that came close to looking and tasting like Hass avocados. That variety is officially known as Wertz but more commonly is called Littlecado or Minicado. It's available through retail nurseries (you may have to order it) or online through commercial growers.

    • 2

Contact specialized avocado nurseries or the avocado horticulture research program at the University of California at Riverside to find out if any dwarf Hass varieties are coming onto the market. To be a true Hass, such a tree would have to be a direct descendant of the Hass “-mother tree”- discovered in the 1920s by postman Rudolph Hass.

    • 3

Search for dwarf Hass avocado candidates at Southern California farmers markets, rare plant sales and other community garden events. Focus your search on San Diego County, which grows some 60 percent of California avocados. Keep an eye out for avocado trees grafted by hobbyists and small-time growers.

    • 4

Attend Southern California garden events, such as the Fullerton Arboretum Green Scene event held every year in April, where unusual and unique plants —- including rare avocado variants —- are available for sale.

How can i remove tarnish from my stainlesssteel cake server without chemicals

How can i remove tarnish from my stainless-steel cake server without chemicals?

It's interesting:
"It was 48 hours before the wedding and I had zero best man speech made. 2 hours after I found your site I had logged off with an excellent speech.' Luke Betts ..."

The advantage of stainless steel is that it resists rust and tarnish -- but even stainless can discolor, especially if it's silver plated. The best method of cleaning tarnished stainless steel is with a chemical-free method, as the harsh chemical reactions often used to remove silver tarnish can corrode stainless steel. With a few items from your kitchen, you can clean your stainless-steel cake server in just a few minutes.

Things You'll Need

  • Small bowl
  • Baking soda
  • Water
  • Microfiber cloth
  • Lemon juice or vinegar

Instructions

    • 1

Put 1/4 cup of baking soda into a small bowl. Gradually add water -- 1/2 tsp. at a time -- until it makes a thick paste.

    • 2

Dip a corner of the microfiber cloth into the baking soda paste and rub on the cake server in a circular motion until the discoloration fades.

    • 3

Rinse well under running water. If there is still a discoloration, rub more baking soda paste on the surface and rinse again. Wipe the cake server dry.

    • 4

Dampen a clean corner of the microfiber cloth with lemon juice or vinegar. Rub the surface of the cake cutter lightly to shine and remove any streaks.

Tips &- Warnings

  • Stainless steel washed in a dishwasher or with dish-washing liquid can result in rainbow-colored streaking, which can be removed with lemon juice or vinegar in the same manner as above.

  • Do not soak stainless steel in vinegar or lemon juice, as it can cause discoloring.

Jewish wedding ceremony program

Jewish wedding ceremony program

It's interesting:
"It's a shame, given this is a winter wedding, that the minister wouldn't let Paul and Linda have the pantomime theme wedding they originally wanted. Looking at Paul, I think ‘Puss in Boots’ would have been very appropriate."

In addition to prayers, remarks and readings, a Jewish wedding ceremony is filled with special rituals. Each tradition has particular symbolism and meaning for the couple and the congregation gathered to witness the union. The number and detail of the rituals performed during the ceremony will differ depending on the denomination of Judaism--Orthodox, Conservative or Reform--practiced by the couple.

  1. The Huppah

    • A "huppah," or a wedding canopy, is one of the most recognizable elements of a Jewish wedding ceremony. The huppah is made up of four poles with a prayer shawl or other piece of fabric stretched between them. Often the couple will use a cloth that has a special significance, such as a family heirloom, to construct the huppah. The huppah symbolizes the couple's home and must be large enough to cover the bride, groom and rabbi. The sides of the huppah are left open to symbolize the importance of the community to the couple.

    Pre-Ceremony

    • Before a traditional Jewish wedding ceremony begins, the groom may present a lecture on the week's Torah reading for his male family and friends. The lecture, or "tish," is intended to be fun, silly and a way for the groom to relax.

Just before the ceremony starts, the couple (or, in Orthodox communities, just the groom) will sign a "ketubah." According to Rabbi Devon A. Lerner, the original purpose of the ketubah was to outline the rights and obligations of the bride and groom--much like a prenuptial agreement. A modern ketubah will likely focus on the couple's personal commitment to each other, and the couple might frame a decorative ketubah to hang as artwork in their home.

During the "b'deken," or veiling of the bride, the groom covers the bride's face. The ritual is intended to show that the groom is most interested in the bride's inner beauty. Some brides may also place a yarmulke on the groom's head at this time.

    Processionals and Recessionals

    • During a Jewish wedding ceremony, the groom's family and friends sit on the left side of the sanctuary and the bride's family and friends sit on the right side of the sanctuary (with left and right determined by facing the front of the sanctuary). As the service begins, the rabbi enters first, followed by the grandparents of the bride, grandparents of the groom, the groomsmen, the best man, the groom with his parents, the bridesmaids, the ring bearer and/or flower girl and the bride with her parents. The order is reversed for the recessional at the end of the ceremony, but the groomsmen escort the bridesmaids up the aisle.

    Wedding Blessings

    • In addition to the customary prayers recited during a Jewish religious service, the rabbi or family and friends of the bride and groom recite a special set of seven blessings, known as the "sheva b'rachot," during the wedding ceremony. According to Rabbi Lerner, the seven blessings offer praise for wine (known as the "Kiddush"), the earth, humanity, the creation of man and woman in God's image, the miracle of birth, bringing the bride and groom together, and the joy of the couple and the hope for a world filled with joy and children. The blessings are normally recited in both Hebrew and English.

    Exchange of Vows and Rings

    • According to theknot.com, a traditional Jewish wedding ceremony does not contain an exchange of vows. Rather, promises between the bride and the groom are understood to be an unspoken part of the ceremony, and the marriage vow is complete when the groom places a ring on the bride's finger and recites a prayer: "Behold, you are consecrated to me with this ring, according to the laws of Moses and Israel." In modern Jewish wedding ceremonies, the bride will repeat the same words as she places a ring on the groom's finger.

    Post-Ceremony

    • The groom stomps on a glass--and the congregation shouts "Mazel Tov!"--to mark the conclusion of the Jewish wedding ceremony. Traditionally, the breaking of the glass symbolizes the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem. According to Rabbi Lerner, the broken glass also symbolizes the fragility of human relationships, and the act of breaking the glass carries an implied prayer that the couple's marriage shall never break. Just after the ceremony, the newly married couple may seclude themselves for a short period of time, called the yichud, before joining their guests to celebrate the union at the reception.

How to make a four tier wedding cake

make a four tier wedding cake

It's interesting:
"Wasn’t the wedding ceremony beautiful? The highlight, of course, was Linda floating magically down the aisle. I’m sure we were all thinking exactly the same thing: “How did HE get HER?”"

It's often said that a wedding is centered around the bride. Her dress, make-up, hair, jewelry, shoes and accessories are what catch everyone's attention. When it comes to the reception, though, the cake is often the centerpiece of the room. Making a four-tier wedding cake isn't the easiest task in the world, but it is something that you can do with patience, careful planning and attention to detail. Whether you're the bride or want to do something to help out a friend, you can make a four-tier wedding cake that's a huge hit.

Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Four cakes

    Icing and decorations

    Cake boards

    Tracing paper or wax paper

    Pencil

    Scissors

    Hollow pillars

    Cake dowels

    Cake stand, platter or plateau

Instructions

  1. Make a Four-Tier Wedding Cake

    • 1

Bake four cakes in graduated sizes. For example, if you are making a round four-tier cake, the cakes can be 6, 9, 12 and 15 inches in diameter or 6, 8, 10 and 12 inches in diameter. Once they cool, use a long serrated knife to cut the top of each cake so it is perfectly even.

    • 2

If using pillars, create a template of each of the three top layers of cake by using tracing paper or wax paper and tracing around the cakes. Cut out the templates, which will be the same size as the cakes, and make marks where the pillars should go. For example, for round cakes, make three marks on each template, evenly spaced, 1 and 1/4 inches in from the edge in the form of a triangle.

    • 3

Place each of the top three layers on a decorated cake board (keep in mind that the bottom of each cake board may be visible when using pillars). The cake board may be slightly smaller than the cake or slightly larger if you plan on using the board to add additional decorations, such as flowers.

    • 4

Place the bottom layer, which will support the other tiers, on your base. You can use a cake stand, platter or plateau to add a decorative touch as long as it is strong enough to support all of the tiers.

    • 5

      Ice each layer.

    • 6

If using pillars, place the template for the top tier on the second tier. Center the template and use a knife to make points in the cake according to your marks on the paper- this will help ensure that you get the positioning of the dowels right to support the tiers correctly. Follow this step one layer at a time until each tier has the appropriate marks. (Note: there will not be any marks on the top tier.)

    • 7

Place the pillars one at a time on each layer over the marks you made. Insert a dowel into each pillar, point first. Once the dowel goes all the way to the bottom of the tier, take it out and reinsert it with the flat part on the bottom. Mark each dowel at the point that it is even with the top of the pillar. Remove the dowels and cut them to size, then reinsert them with the flat surface on the bottom (for stability) and confirm that they are even with the pillars.

    • 8

Center the layers on top of each other (with or without pillars), beginning with the bottom and working your way up. Once all four layers are securely in place, add any finishing touches such as more decorative icing, fresh flowers, pearls, flower petals, or whatever decorations fit the theme of the wedding.

Tips &- Warnings

  • Use at least three evenly spaced pillar/dowels for round cakes, four for square cakes, and at least three for oddly shaped cakes.

Be extremely careful during transport. It is best to disassemble the cake and then set it up again at its destination.

You can use short (or no) pillars and add decorations between tiers to give the cake a simple cascading line.

  • Do not cluster pillars in the center, or the cake will likely collapse.

Do not use royal icing with pillars, as you cannot insert dowels into it.
